How about Texas skips the cost of those trains, takes the money, and puts it back into the business community so you can get a job in your home town and not have to commute 2 hours every day?Quote:

Either way, however, the use of those go further than that as I outlined earlier. I'm not some train fanatic that figures it would be cool to have some "nice shiny trains."
Polution: Houston has the worst air. It also has no regulation on industry and, to compound the situation there is currently no rail and current rail projects are pathetic and useless (a thing I would like if I were keen on pretty trains).
Road conditions and upkeep: The nice interstate system mentioned earlier is crumbling due to over use here. It comprises most of the City of Houstons budget just to maintain the portions in the city.
There is no relyable public transortation in San Antonio, Houston and (possibly, I'm not sure) Dallas. Austin is small enough to not have this problem though it's traffic is by far the worst.
Industrial rail is in decay. Only two lines opperate in Houston (leading into the Port of Houston) and this city is the ONLY major source of import/export in Texas.
These are reasons. The construction of this in anycase does also provide jobs, fills basic needs for the present and most certianly the future (my senerio is only one - jobs are available, just not close by - Houston itself take more than an hour to traverse... not unlike LA) and it will not just create jobs building it, sustaining it and operating it, but it will also move people around (freeways bring in jobs - proven fact. Sugar Land, TX was a Sugar Town... that's all it was. A factory. Now it's considered the Beverly Hills of Houston. A fucking Freeway and smart real estate did that) more effectiently and create job AROUND it though not directly related to the actual buliding or operation of this rail.
"Right, wrong, smart, stupid - you've got less influence, less money, and fewer guns. You are fucked."
I'm sure those were George HW's words to Saddam as we left in '91.
If college prepares you to spout such intelligent lines as this, where the hell do I sign up?! I'd say the above quotation really puts things (most notably the only thing America has been able to standardize: ignorant and insensitive patriotic arrogance) into perspective.
At least the world will be a better place once the folks who think/talk/act in the spirit of the above quotation get their way. Maybe we'll be able to have slaves again too!

The world would be a better place if it was cleansed of all the morons who thought might is right.... The only thing thats right is human progression, bigger gun big fucking deal, I;ve got a good health care system, and I'd much rather see people helped than shot. It's a shame diffx, that you are one of the reasons americans are thought of so badly internationally. to all americans who arent so ignorant I appologise in advance, you're really great neighbours, and it's a shame we have to take the good with the bad.
I think college taught me to say that and not "My country can kick your country's ass." It's insensitive patriotic arrogance, but it's not ignorant.Quote:

It's funny because it's ironic. Anyways, I figure the "might is right" people could take the "might is icky, I like flowers" people in a straight-up fight.Quote:

The liberal slant of college campuses is well know and quite well documented. I can point to many many examples of such things on this campus. My roommate last year would get frequent emails from his professors urging him to go to anti-war protests/dont sign the recall petition/who the fuck knows what else. And these are theatre classes. Goddammit you pay your professors to teach the subject you sign up for, not to ram their politicial "ideas" down your throat. If that happened to me I would file a complaint with the school immediately. Thankfully since I am a student of mathematics I do not have to deal with this bullshit.Quote:

Thankfully my parents instilled in me well-defined ideas like the uselessness of government beyond a limited scope (no I dont want any of the general government benefits provided for in Europe) and the power of a military versus the 'make love not war' idiots so I am more or less immune to that trash. I dont want the police to protect me, give me a goddamn gun so I can do it myself.
