Yeah, the game was supposed to arrived yesterday, but none of the local game stores got them yet. Perhaps I'll check out Wal-Mart this weekend.
Well, the game is out and in my hands. Let me tell you, it lives up to the Double Dragon name. I love this game, and I've only played 20 minutes/two levels.
But first I have to tell you about the coolest thing I have ever seen on a game box: The back of the box features a list of "bullet points" giving the highlights and features of the game, but the bullets themselves are sprite rips of the orriginal NES 8-bit Abobo head! Perfect! That head's not even in the game (Abobo and his head got re-drawn quite nicely in the game itself), but it works perfectly. :)
As for the game, it doesn't forget its roots either. Every level begins with the "old time yellowed photograph" shot used in the 8-bit NES game. Nice touch. All the music returns. All the weapons return. Sprites are fantastic, but you've all seen the screen shots already. Get ready for a few surprises like an Abobo with a big ol' fro.
The gameplay does not feel very "Double Dragon" due to enemies sliding back when hit and your character sliding forward while attacking. If I had to compare the feel of the controls to another Double Dragon game, I would say it feels most like the PC Engine Double Dragon II CD game (even though I'm pretty sure that game didn't have the "sliding"). I'm sure no more than a handful of you have played that, so most of you will just have to go on wondering how it plays. :) Even though it doesn't quite control like Double Dragon, the control is excellent and tons of fun.
The arsenal of moves will be very familliar however. Again, Atlus stays true to Double Dragon history while finally correcting things that needed correcting. Are you ready to finally knee bash and throw Abobo, Bolo, Abore, and the rest of the big guys? Whoo hoo! That was a long time comming. :) Speaking of throws, they finally knock down enemies in thier path (although Super DD 4 also did this). Several other aspects of DD4 are also brought over. You can block again, just like DD4, but it is handled differently. It seems you can no longer catch an enemy punch ( :( ), but you can now time the block exactly with the contact of the punch to defensivly throw the enemy. Also returning from DD4 is the low shin kick (down + kick). You also get the "bash a downed enemy" move from DD1 NES and the run from DD3 NES. Other than that, the move set and button combos seem identical to the arcade DD1 (no hurricane kick). Keep in mind this is what I found from limited play and no instructions.
One thing that I loved about the game is that the whip is finally useful. It actually has a Simon Belmot range now. :) Still two whips to knock down, while the baseball bat remains a one-hitter. Oh, and every enemy in the game is still a sucker for the back elbow (and the back elbow is still jump + punch), as it should be. However, the range of the elbow has been drastically reduced.
Well, I'll be back when I play more, but for now this game is amazing, and certainly all I was hoping for.
Sounds sweet. We don't have this at my store yet.
Thanks for the impressions, I'll try and snag this one up during the next week or so, and maybe even do a history of Double Dragon piece to commemorate the release.

shame about that defensive block not having the 'catch' though..
but it sounds like they just made it so you need more skill to use it properly.
Picked it up today. The game is amazing and if you don't buy it you deserve to die. ;) It's just pure joy to play.
And despite what Chibi Nappa says, the game feels just like the arcade DD, only better as all your moves, especially punching, are infintely more effective. The weapons too. The whip is actually useful now. :nod: They solve your upgraded arsenal by chucking a zillion enemies at you, and it works.
The sound is great. While the music is rather GBA-ish, the attack sound effects are excellent and give you soooooo much pleasure when smashing these goons to death.
Blocking seems to only work for so many punches before you just eventually stop but it's cool to block since you actually have 2 blocking animations giving you that martial art movie repel effect. Your duck that leads up to either a knee or uppercut is alot of fun to use even though you tend to get punished for it if you mess up.
Running is very useful too as you'll need to to knock down hordes of goons when they become too much. And it's great to jump on an enemies chest, caving it in.
And last but not least, FULL COLOR MANUAL! :D

The air-launching kick from a grapple is in from DD2. Press up/foward and A simultaneously after two knees. Trying to see if the chopping elbow is in, too.
There's the stomp with A+B, the kneeling punch with down+A+B, the running lariat, the running shuffle kick, the running leg lariat (A+B)
The large arsenal really makes the game fun.
One thing has me curious. If you let your character remain idle, they go into a different stance. They'll also go into it after certain moves. I wonder if it's just for show, or if it has a purpose?
my GS is getting this in today (if the distro is to be believed anyway). I can't wait!
