Halo and GTA didn't start this trend, it has been going on in the USA ever since the early days of the PSX. Companies make mainstream games because that is what will sell, the niche market doesn't show dollars in the eye's of game companies. Not all mainstream games are bad however, Halo is one of the few newer games that I like. I have put around 500+ hours onto that game playing with friends, parties, etc. My heart however, lies with SNK, SEGA, and the "old" Nintendo. I rather be playing the Neo-Geo, Sega Saturn, or SNES anyday over the Xbox, PS2, and Gamecube simply because of the quality games. Most older games in the 16-bit era had heart, developers took their time into creating a incredible atmosphere, great sound track, and interesting characters. Most gamers today do not care about these things though, and it is sad. The other day my friend told me while I was playing Last Blade on the Neo-Geo; "Why are you playing this crap when you could be playing Soul Calibur?" This comment made me lose hope for many of the gamers today, they are so blind. Despite your hate for the mainstream give some newer games a chance, you may be suprised and actually take a liking to some. Castlevania LOI, Rygar, and Virtua Fighter 4 Evolution are a few reasons to not lose all hope just yet.
