Does it feel right?
These are the questions I didn't have to ask myself because enough of my PC loving friends had the foresight to ask for me. Well, I could easily cop out, say it wasn't, and return to writing bad pop songs about love and robots, but dear readers, you deserve more.
If you don't know what Counterstrike is then get out of your chair, crouch under your desk, and make sure what your actually using is a computer.
I mean seriously.
Counterstrike is a multiplayer modifcation of Half-Life that the general populace has been playing for longer than Tyler's been getting those funny feelings. The PC version maps range from ingenious to basic geometry 101, but are infinite because everyone and their mom can make them. This is a big downfall on the Xbox, as that kind of variety is hard to beat when content downloads only come through Microsoft. But thats a whole 'nother issue entirely.
Just to give you an idea of how much I wanted to love this, well, I am a diehard console freak. The biggest downfall of Counterstrike for me (and many other first person shooter's that ferment on a PC) is the fact that just about every single one requires some inborn skill with a keyboard and mouse which after 15 years of console playing, I am simply incapable of. When I heard this was being ported to the Xbox, I was estatic, as finally the norm would be the smooth analog control I had grown into, and not the jerkiness of the aformentioned keyboard and mouse combination.
The control ain't half bad in the Xbox version. The online play is where the game shines. That being said, and I really hate to say this because I hate PC gamers, but they're right here. Something is missing, but more than that...
there was really no reason to port this. Everything is done better on the PC. Its cheaper on the PC. The new mods look better on the PC. It probably runs smoother on your Pentium II than on the Xbox. I mean goddammit, this was just a waste of resources.
The Graphics and Sound are slightly (by slightly I mean, they changed the poly counts and programmed it in 5.1) but thats it folks, the single player game and training modes are a joke, and the option to play with a bunch of people using a controller as the standard is nice, but not worth the money your paying for Xbox live.
Honestly I tried to enjoy this, I really did. But even I, the single most jaded console vs. PC gamer of all time, has to concede that if you can read this review, then the PC your on right now can probably run Counterstrike up to par with what you would pay to much money for on the Xbox.
Someday we will get those keyboard and mouse bastards friends,
just not today.
