It's more of a standard than anything. Hardware XYZ is DirectX 9 compatible for instance. It gives game developers a common set of hardware capabilities for which to code.

It's a godsend in my eyes.

Saves all the installation trouble of having to pick which sound card you have, what port it's in, etc., etc.

I still remember the Sam and Max sound test: "That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard."

It's always the Duke3D sound test for me. Bowling pins falling down.
