Rose is finally admitting to betting on baseball games. And conveniently enough it's all in his new book to be released shortly. He's also going to be interviewed on TV about it on ABC in a few days. One assumes that now that Rose has come clean, Bud Selig will bow to popular opinion and allow him into the hall of fame. Of course this is just a move by Selig to garner some good publicity for himself because everyone knows what a bumbling jackass he is.
Allowing Rose into the hall of fame is wrong. This thread is a continuation of a discussion started in an old Roger Clemens thread located here
Here are my own posts from the aforementioned thread regarding Rose. I suggest everyone read the links, as they outline all the known information and offer a viewpoint you don't get in the romantisized media portrayal of the "tortured" Pete Rose. The fact is, Pete Rose is a piece of shit.

in response to the pete rose comments, anyone who believes he is innocent should read this and then reconsider thier opinion.

not that this is really a valid excuse for Rose, he associated with cocaine dealers, and even brought them into the club house.Quote:
6) Why is betting on baseball a bad thing? Guys who take drugs or beat their wives don't get such harsh punishment. Lots of them are in the Hall of Fame.
Gambling is the worst thing a ballplayer can do, because it undermines the integrity of the game. Since the goals of the gambler are different than the normal goals of a baseball team, fan's trust in the game is shaken.
The use of drugs or other offenses are sometimes punished by baseball. While these may be crimes against society, they are not necessarily crimes against baseball.
A good link for the case against Rose by my favorite baseball writer Rob Neyer.
So now that he's admitted it, should Pete Rose be allowed into the hall of fame? It has been widely speculated that if he is reinstated that the Reds would hire him as manager. Should this also be allowed?Quote:
The allegations were that he bet on baseball, including his own team. There is no public evidence he ever bet against the reds, although in 2002 Dowd came out and said he had evidence this did happen. It was not included in any reports filed to MLB because he deemed it unreliable, and therefor was not considered in charges against Rose. This makes no difference, betting for or against still changes the way one might play the game.
The rules for eligibility in the hall of fame state that anyone who is banned from baseball is also banned from inclusion in the hall of fame. As much as people think the hall of fame should be a historical record, it's not. What it is is the highest honor that can be bestowed upon a baseball player. Rose disgraced the game, he does not deserve to be honored by a sport his actions could ruin.
