A bit late, I know, but I just remembered we have Iranian descendants and perhaps one member in Iran. Just wanted say my heart goes out to you and your families should you have been touched by this tragedy. SC, and ... I can't remember his name but one other member I believe...
This was an awful tragedy, but if you think about it... an earthquake of the same magnitude hit Santa Barbara a day before (or whatever). Two people died, and I think six more in related mudslides.
The body count is up to what, 35,000 in Bam?
Kinda makes you think about which government is doing things the right way. This isnt a point directed at Almaci or whomever, its just some brain food.
I'd thought of the comparison between the quakes too. But still, lots of people suffering over there and hope the best for them.
Amazing and sad that so many people died to one brief event. Now that I think about it, there was really never a thread about the quake in Iran. I was pretty shocked at how much it was ignored by the media personally and that made me pretty angry. Like Scourge, I'd like to extend any comfort that might be had with condolances, even if no one personally affected by the earthquake visits this site.
The Other Iranian would be me :D . Thanks for the kind words everyone. I was lucky enough not to have any family in that Region of the country, but I do know many people who did. One person I know lost 24 people in their family!! 24!! I can't even imagine that! There are so many orphaned children now in Bam, that it really breaks my heart to even think about it.
A few of you guys have made comparisons between the earthquakes in Santa Barbara and the one In Bam, it's kind of unfair to compair..since Bam is a 2000 year old city built with bricks and mud and Santa Barbara is what...60 years old..if that? The real sad part is that these people are already forgotten in the US. Yesterdays news already, now we are back to being obsessed with Britanny Spears latest stupidity and if Kobe really wanted to go through the back door. Oh well...I've donated over $1000.00 to the families in Bam and will probably donate more if I can. I wish there was more I could do. I do have to say, I'm really glad some people here really care enough to mention this tragedy here. Thanks :_)
It disgusts me that the ongoing conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq are even pushed off the front page by random shit like you mentioned (e.g. Britanny Spears). There are some people with isolationist views that don't care what happens to foreigners. However, not caring about what happens to the people that protect those same people's freedoms to care or not care is just wrong.Quote:
