Good Teacher, Bad Teacher
Many of us are a few weeks into this years first semester, so what do you guys think so far? How are you liking your classes. Any you really enjoy, any you hate? Any suprises.
I like my CS class, along with my logic class. Technical phyiscs II is busting me ass, but I'm sure if I worked harder I could do better.
I hate my calc 2 class. This is a my second time taking it (got a D because I goofed off and did really bad on 2 or 3 test.) and my teacher is making it insanely hard. Last semester at my last school I took two 5 hours calc classes. So I have seen 10 hours worth of calc. -_- on my first calc test this man pulled out things I had never seen before. He combined log/ln/e^x with derivatives and integrals involving inverse trigonometric functions. So if you were confused or still not clear on one part of the homework for the past few weeks you couldn't fenish or work any of the problems. You could get a 0 just for having a fogy memory on one section from the chapter. I have no idea why he chose to do it this way as normally teachers break the test up into sections as to test you on your ability in each part of the chapter, as to clearly see what you know and what you do not know ( I know you are thinking duh, but someone hasn't let this man in on this).
But it isn't just this one test that makes me hate the class, it's this guys entire teaching structure. Instead of asking you to read ahead and showing you how to use what is in the chapter the next day, he spends the entire period proving theorems then asigns the homework. He doesn't show you how to USE what he just prooved. To make matters worse he asigns some evens (no answers in the back of the book) and doesn't go over the homework. If you have a problem with anything he asigns the problem as extra-credit. WTF good does that do anyone? All that does is give the person who does know how to do it a point, while leaving the rest of the class out in the cold. All of this wouldn't be so bad though, as ive already had the class and already know this stuff, but then he goes off and puts never seen before questions on the test. What good does this man think he is doing anyone? He doesn't teach you how to do calc 2, he doesn't go over the homework so you can know if you are doing it correctly, and then he gives you test that are insanely hard and do not really measure your ability in the class?
We got said test back yesterday. Out of the entire class, 3 people passed, the rest made below a 60, as I knew everyone would (when I read the test for the first time I thought to myself "@_@ you ass, you just failed the class"). And if the bad grades were not enough to ruin everyones day, this man had the balls to act like he had no blame in it, and it was everyone elses fault. He talked of how he checked the records and how he didn't care how high we all made on our ACTs and how stupid our last calc teachers were for us to do so bad on this test and yet do so good in our past math classes. The man is a idoit and an asshole. How can you fail 90% of a class, see that they are all good students from their records and not think you are to blame at all?
I'm probably going to drop this class, as I've seen the other calc2 teachers test and know that my class is the only one getting screwed like this. There is no reason to put myself through this if I don't have to. The time spent meeting this man's insane requirements could be better used on other classes.
