If I were you, I'd skip over SW: GB it really is a shitty AoE clone. Mzo's right about Grim Fandango, but you should play those Thief games too.

Tactics Ogre (ep vii) is raping me through the pants. It is really, really hard. I see a few ways it could be exploited to make it a bit easier, but that's a bit like Izuna Dropping/Swallow Diving your way through Ninja Gaiden. Only weenies stoop to such depths. I shall prevail!

But god damn it's hard. 15 casualities so far, including several story characters, a hapless innocent I failed to save from being murdered, and pretty much all of my starting crew. You really don't want to sign up to join my little army.

Weekend update, post your progress

Still playing Tactics Ogre. Still insanely hard, but really enjoyable. The story is surprisingly good. I can't believe this game was made in like 95 or whatever. It's arguably deeper than FFT, more challenging, and has three separate paths through the whole game O_o

If it wasn't so damn hard, I'd recommend it to any srpg fan

I also spent some more time with FFTA (I needed a break from being thrashed by TO). Easy as hell. Don't know how the team that did TO gba went from that to making a super easy kidified FFT, but oh well. I suppose they were going for a broader market appeal.

I can't help but wonder if Matsuno will direct another Ogre Battle after finishing FF12 (Episode 8?), or perhaps do a proper sequel to Tactics. Given Square's latest binge of convergence and rehashes, I wouldn't be surprised to see FFT2 in the FF12 universe if it did happen.

Finished TO :D -2 srpgs. Going to keep plowing on FFTA and then contemplate FFT.

TO was an absolutely COOL game, but there's no way I could unconditionally recommend it to a more casual srpg player. For one, it is *brutally* difficult. On top of that, the combat speed... ugh. I whined about the speed in the gba version, but the psx/snes port version will drive you up the damn wall with the glacially slow spell animations. The problem is that the multisquare spells do the animation on every. single. square. So you cast meteor or whatever, and it drops a slow moving (don't ask me) rock on 13 squares. You get to sit and watch. And remember, these battles tend to be 10 v 10, so there will usually be 5+ casters using big aoe spells every single round.

Ignoring that, it had a mature, gritty medieval storyline, and really, really deep gameplay. Matsuno seems to like that style, as it is similar to Vagrant Story in both respects.
