He says it's to protect the sanctity (sp) of marriage - I would almost believe him if it weren't for the fact that marriages is, as is, about what? a 50%+ divorce rate? Marriage has become nothing more than another tax bracket, benefits, and health care pakages to the eyes of many. Plus many people who jump into marriage know that it's no longer taboo and forsaken to divorce, so people marry easier, thinking "oh, I can always get a divorce later." If Bush wanted to protect the sanctity of marriage, he'd do something about that. And nothing forcfully by the feds - he'd become a spokesperson for good marriages, not make it say, against the law to break up. Just be a voice informing people that "this is what marriage is and what it means and take it seriously."
But no.
This is also EXTREMELY sketchy, imo, because the core idea that made me believe in the 'right wing' is of little governmental involvement in the day-to-day lives of people. People are smart, and can take care of their own and each other. A lot of laws we have are common sense, although progressively we're getting to a point where government (left AND right) want to social engineer through law. I won't buy into it or stand for it. This idea of making it unconstitutional for gay marriage is just another nail in the coffin.
