The kid flew away and visited different parts of the world, which explains where all the postcards came from. Far as I can tell, the step dad quit beating his older brother for the reason he drove that kid to leave in the first place.
Maybe there was another ending where he did get killed, I wouldn't know because I've never seen it.

I'm glad that there are fans of this wondeful movie.
I liked it also, need to watch it again as I do remember it being both a sad but uplifting film. Had Joseph Mazello in it, didn't it? (little dino loving kid from JP 1)
