Now THAT is an analogy
Battle on PopN 9 is fun and stupid at the same time. I didn't get the ping pong one but the whole smash blue as fast as you can was dumb.
lol Sl1p.
So, I've been kinda half-eyeing Pop'n Music since I got into IIDX earlier this year. I've yet to try it because I'm scared. Kinda like cheebs up there I guess -- if I like it, well, there goes hundreds and hundreds of dollars and hours. BUT, seeing as how IIDX is pretty much the most fun I've ever had with a videogame, and well worth every penny and drop of sweat I've put into it thus far, I'd be a damn fool not to give Pop'n a whirl if it has the potential to offer a similar experience.
So, there's lots of sites for me to ask my questions, but I'll start here on TNL, although I'm not sure how many of y'all play this. What release should I start with? Is the Konami Pop'n ASC true arcade quality and dimensions (unlike their IIDX ASC), or should I maybe consider DJ Dao's? How is the music consistency? Are there some *really* great tracks and some *really* crappy ones with a bunch of stuff in between, ala IIDX? Do any of you who have played both extensively really think Pop'n is better? Is this series really more popular than IIDX in Japan?
The good news is that this will be my last peripheral-driven rhythm game obsession for awhile if I do end up getting into it. I have virtually zero interest in GH/DDR/Guitar Freaks/Drummania/Keyboardmania/etc.

You really just gonna dive into an ASC? The standard controllers for this (the newer ones, at least) are really nice, imo.
Nomi had 8, 9, and 10, I think. There were a bearable (even good?) songs, but I found most of it to be pretty horrible. Then again, you might dig some of it.
I've gotten to mess with the official and a Ransai briefly, and they seemed pretty comparable. and loud. Can't be more of a help than that, though.
Nah, not necessarily gonna dive right into an ASC. I'm just looking to the future.
What was horrible about the songs? Too cutesy?
I'd love to just try the game to see how the songs are and if I can get into the button slapping thing (which I imagine does feel quite different from IIDX). I should look for an arcade around here. There's probably a machine not too far from me.
Yeah, the music is heavily heavily cutesy. Too much for me, most of the time.
I was watching some youtube videos last night. I was naively optimistic in thinking I might not need this game.
I'll be going all in with the latest release and a DJ Dao controller likely by month's end. My next obsession is here!
You might want to play it before you drop a few hundred dollars on it. I enjoyed the gameplay but the music kind of trashed it for me. The amount of yodeling and Japanese-doing-US-country music was horrible. IIDX had a lot of passable garbage but Pop'n was less tolerable to me.
No, I want to drop hundreds and risk it! It's more fun that way. :) Worst case scenario: I sell the controller and game for a slight loss.
Pop'n 9 is my least favorite
(OK, 7 is my least favorite, but 9 is next)
I like
12, 11, 8, 10, 9, 7 (13 coming from pAsia--can't give opinion yet)
In that order
Oh, and the Pop'n songlists for the most part kick ass, Tough Guys
Also, ASC's can look cool...
