World of Warcraft: Beta Begins

I am looking foreward to WoW. I am hoping Blizzard can take the normal MMO elements and make them fun, like back when Asheron's Call came out and you didnt know how bad it was. Now that the genre is defined a bit more, I dont mind people using elements that have already been used, as long as it doesnt become a bore. And lag, lag makes the game unbearable. I played ShadowBane for like 4 months, and the game was fun as hell, but tech problems and the lag really killed it.

Basically what anyone needs to do is take FFXI and dont do anything like it. worst-game-ever.

I guarantee there will be lots more than three servers. Battle.net is just a matchmaking service, this game will require many more servers.

I read about 2,000-3,000 people per server playing at any given time... not sure how many total players a server would have. But expect lots.

As for continents, I don't know how big they are, but I'm sure every server will have both continents on them, and servers of course won't connect to other ones.

Big. There are two continents to start with, and then the huge areas of the Maelstrom and Northrend are likely going to be saved for expansions down the line.

Each continent is divided into 'zones' or 'regions'. An example, if you start a Dwarf, you'll begin on the continent of Azeroth in the region of Dun Morogh. Should you decide you've outgrown the area, or you simply want to explore, you can trek due east, pass through some mountain tunnels, and emerge in the Loch Modan. Or, you could head into Ironforge (the dwarven capital city), and take a Gryphon ride to Stormwind (the human capital city to the south), giving you quick access to other regions to explore. As you explore the land, you'll discover new Gryphon flight routes that will allow you to quickly get from one place to another.

There are many regions per continent, and all of them are large, impressive looking, and highly detailed. They're also packed with stuff to do - ore and herbs out in the wilds to gather for tradeskills, camps of creatures or wandering monsters to hunt, miniature caves and dungeons, underwater stuff (and creatures, and treasure), small towns with trainers and vendors, and lots and lots and lots of really beautiful scenery. Then there are the quests... I've been doing quests every minute that I've been playing, and that shows no signs of stopping any time soon (and I get the impression that it's not supposed to stop - you can quest your way up to the max level, doing whatever quests interest you).

Some of the clarifications people have posted make a lot more sense, and the new screenshots are very impressive. I wish we knew a more firm date.

c'mon you know theres never firm dates with blizzard ;)

I dont see what this game has that Star Wars Galaxies doesn't. In fact, it seems like it doesn't have as much as SWG, and by the time Jump to Lightspeed comes out, it will in fact have a lot less.

I downloaded the 14 day trial to mess around and see if the game is any different.

Early battle is, well, seemingly the same as always. If JtL is XvT with a new batch of "ready to die" rookie pilots then I'm in 100%. I'll be the guy in the T/I destroying everyone. If it requires too much time actually playing SWG to get to the XvT portion I might as well forget it.

Maybe MMORPGs just aren't for me anymore. After EQ nothing else seems worth playing and EQ itself is too horribly flawed to even consider.

But I still want to play WoW. Why? I don't know.

I didnt play Star Wars Galaxies at launch so I dont know, but from what I read they basically added a lot of the stuff they should've added in the beginning: player cities, vehicles, etc. Within a week they're gonna drop in the revamped Jedi system, and so forth. The early game is, I imagine, unchanged from the beginning.

But if you don't like the combat and stuff from SWG I doubt you're gonna like World of Warcraft that much more. The games seem really similar. So yea maybe MMOs arent for you. They're both better than EverQuest, thats for sure (theyre both more like UO than EQ, anyway).
