You have to unlock the skills via RPGing, but you can get a good selection of skills for two classes in under an hour, especially if you know what you're doing. The quickest way is to do the bare minimum in pre-searing, basic training and getting to level three, leave the academy, lose the arena fight because you'll suck, get to Ascalon, grab some henches and do every quest in sight. These will lead you to getting a huge assortment of skills in no time. Right now I have over a dozen necro skills alone and I still have quests I haven't bothered to finish. Any skills given out in pre-searing / tutorial area can be got afterwards, either through quests or just plain bought, so you don't have to worry about missing anything. All the skills you get this way will be unlocked to be used for a PvP character.

So I've been playing some PVP, and I don't know. I probably need to grab some new skills, or maybe get some skillz, but I tend to be on the losing end of the blade more often than not.

Thank you much. Only problem is in my haste to make it to post searing, I forgot to get the res signet. Now I really dont feel like spending a skill point on it. Blah.

I went with a Necro/Ranger, and now Im wondering if that was a good idea. The pet is nice to have, but I havent found any terribly usefull skills to help out my necro side.

Error: It's all about tactics. I mean, I went in there with no skills what-so-ever and my group still won quite a few matches. Of course, it wasn't very much fun playing the bait the whole time.

PvP is about teamplay first, individual abilities second, and what skills you have a distant third. Only at the higher levels will you need to be touting an elite skill to have a chance.

You only need the res signet if you PvE. It's not worth the skill slot in PvP. Necro/ranger is an odd combo. The only thing I can think of is beef up wilderness survival so Troll Ugrent is maxed then use mainly health sacrificing skills for your necro side. That and using bow skills for your main attacks like arrow ignite and focus the necro side mainly on support skills. I'd have to try it myself to get a feel for it before I could think my way through how I'd play that particular combo.

My role in PVP is to neutralize casters or to pull melees away from the thick of battle. Running into their group and past them will typically pull one or two melees after me, which means it's 3 v 2 or so in our favor. Bening warrior base, with Endure Pain, I can keep them off for long enough and still have the strenth to fight them off. Taking out casters is as easy as Ether Feast (mesmer secondary) with some Phantasam. If they can't cast often they're dead. My biggest weakness is against Ranger Mesmers. Thats an overlooked and dangerous combo if played well. Pure mesmers are also really tricksy, because none of my tomfoolery works well against them and usually ends up working against me.

I like playing a Necro/Ranger. I use a pet and animate bone horror spell. Then attack long range with a bow and arrow. Then casting hex spells and using the vamp spells to heal myself. All classes have their upside.

This game is fun. people keep telling me its not a "real" MMO but I do't really care.

Aye, thats why I tried it. Im usually mesmer with something else, cause mesmers are just freakin awesome, but also because I got used to them in the beta, so I know how to play them. I just wish there was a skill list out there, so that I could know what would be a good combo to suit my playing style, and what abilities to focus on.

A Necro with decent curse and death abilities mixed with a mesmer of high illusion and inspiration abilities would be a damn heavy hitter I'd wager.
