I have nothing against Rare, though I can't say their last couple releases have been worth playing at length. I really enjoyed Banjo-Kazooie and Jet Force Gemini, and a few of their NES games.

DKC though, is one of the most over-hyped games ... pretty much ever. It can't even compare to platformers that actually have interesting play mechanics ... say, Yoshi's Island or Bionic Commando or Ninja Gaiden or etc. etc.

I felt some small vindication when the recent GBA rehash of DKC got ripped in reviews .. and rightfully so. Take away the graphics and the game's got nothing but average platforming. It's a one-trick pony of glitz over substance, and always has been. It fooled a lot of people.

While I'm a fan of the DKC games I fully agree that they are among the most over-hyped games ever. They're good but absolutely not in the same league as the 2d Mario or Sonic games.

Rare was an awesome developer in the '80s/early '90s but they really went downhill in the N64 years.

I still can enjoy a playthrough of DKC or DKC2 on SNES, but I have no desire to buy either game again for anything. I'm not a Rare fan in the least, but I felt they were solid, fun games. No, their play mechanics didn't bring anything new to the table, but they were amusing enough for what they were.

Oh, and skelly, I dig the Tama custom title. I never did get to play that game. I remember seeing it in magazines after the Japanese PS and Saturn launches... for as much as I love to play early PS and Saturn games, as bad as some of them may be, for some reason, I haven't snatched that one up yet.

Rare's stuff in the past half-decade or so has been hit or miss. When it its, it's great, when it misses though...ouch. Blast Corps was, and is, one of the most creative games I've played. A sequel or remake of that for the Xbox 2, or 3, would be great. Banjo-Kazooie was fun, Tooie wasn't, DK 64 was fun for the first dozen hours, then went downhill. Nice boss battle though. JFG is on my must-buy list once I can actually find a copy. Grabbed by the Ghoulies made for an enjoyable demo, and I'll buy it after picking up some of the other newly-dropped Xbox games.

Was I the only one who finished DK 64? I bought it on launch, it required the expansion pack. I found every blueprint, and all the secrets. The Beetle races were so darn hard. There were two hidden games to be found too. People always bash DK 64, but the last boss battle fight is genius and worth the playthru.

I agree, I thought DK64 sucked. Why do I have to play through every level five times exactly, collecting all sorts of shit?

And this is coming from someone who really enjoyed the Banjo Kazooie games... but damn... DK64 was waaaay too much for me bullshit for me. Which is a shame since it could have been decent.

I was actually having a game of DKC2 this morning before I went out to work. Fun game.

Sweet. Tell me if you ever get to play it, cuz I'm curious too. I seem to remember hearing it sucks, but I dunno. It looks ... curious. Like a worthy $5 diversion. I guess I share your fascination with early 32-bit stuff. I prize my original copy of Motor Toon GP, and I'm thinking of trying King's Field (2) soon.

If you're patient, KF2 can be a pretty awesome game. King's Field isn't for everyone, but I really dig it. I need to get my hands on a copy of MTGP, and MTGP2 at that. Now that I have Jumping Flash! 2 I don't really feel much of a desire for the first anymore... what an awesome game. I heard Robbit Mon Dieu sucked, though... blah. What I wouldn't give for a PS2 JF game.

One early PS game I find damn charming is Crime Crackers. Not the greatest FPS ever, mind you, but it has a lot of personality, and a cool vocal theme song at that. I need to go through old magazines and make a checklist of shit I desperately want to try at least once, ha. For some reason every title coming out back then was so exciting to me, and I have trouble getting excited about more than ten games per year anymore. This is probably due to the fact that I was 11 years old in 1995. Yeah, um, now that I think about it, that explains a lot.
