Hey, I've had some great professors and teachers over the years. Their words of encouragement and admonishment ("THE WRITING MUST IMPROVE!") have stayed with me for years. I really can't wait until school's over so I can shake some of their hands.Quote:

Not necessarily. I would think that which college you choose should be based on your major. You decide what you want to study and then choose the college that does it best.

Yeah, but a lot of people aren't going to be using their major in their eventual career.
I don't know, I'm doing some hiring at work right now, and the first thing I look at is how well your resume is compiled. The second is the name of the school you graduated from. Major doesn't matter at all, since if you're smart, you're smart, whether or not you studied Art History or EE.
I can tell you that my company will not even hire new people to work in the warehouse (filling orders) if they don't have college degrees.
That is one big prop Ill give a good (key word, good) community college. If you find a good one, virtually all the teachers are there because they want to teach you and want you to learn, as most community college's don't do research.Quote:

he was my calc 2 teacher here, and all he did was go over the proofes in the book. He didn't go over homework, he didn't answer questions, in fact he got angry and upset if you asked questions most of the time, that or gave you an unrelated answer. If you asked about a homework problem, he refused to answer it, he just asigned it as extra credit, which did fuck nothing for the people who didn't know how to do it. I could go on, but there is a really long list of just how bad of a teacher this man was. I knew I was in trouble the first day when he told us the only reason he went to college was because he was dating a girl who wanted to go. His teaching methods and insane test forced me to drop the class. I plan on taking it this summer somewhere else.
Worse yet, he is teaching calc three after the summer, and is the only one here teaching it. I can't go here any longer becuase of that. I need to get that class out of the way now. Im a Eng major and the end of my second year is aproaching.

Holy crap - 23% of British fetuses are aborted. 23%! I had no idea it was that high.
That doesn't seem to make much sense, nor does it seem fair. There are many people who went to Harvard and can't find a coherent sentence with both hands and a flashlight. Why would you hire them just because they went to Harvard? They do that a lot here with the University of PR. Graduates from UPR get a lot of false prestige due to where they studied, even though private universities here kill them in many areas.Quote:

As for people not using their degrees in their careers, that goes right back to the topic of this thread. Too many students study something because:
A. It'll make them a lot of money.
B. It's what they love and they don't care about the money.
In A, which I have seen over and over again, students want to be lawyers, doctors, engineers, etc, just for the money. They finish their degree, go into practice.....and hate it. Bam! 4 years down the drain and you've got some sheepskin toilet paper. I've seen so many high school kids study something "because it's cool" and not because it's something they really want to do for the rest of their lives.
In B, many people study to become artists, actors, musicians, etc, but never suceed so they get jobs in something else. Another wasted college education.
I always tell my students to find a balance between what you love and what can make you money. If you wouldn't spend $8 and 2 hours to see a movie again that you found "decent," why would you dedicate thousands of dollars and years of your life on a career that's only decent? It makes no sense.

Currently, I'm a Information Systems Technologies major at the University of Houston, in Sophmore standing (6 hours away from being a junior) successfully working my way out of academic probation that happened in 2001 (long ass story), but certain circumstances this semester have made me realize how much I do not want to go through this particular degree program (awful classes, even worse professors, cutting out web development classes, etc). Not to mention that my brother graduated from this same University with the same degree and can't even land an IT related job (he's a glorified secretary at an insurance firm in California, he hates it).
I hate how they changed the IST degree program to focus on corporate IT workings, and put the technical stuff on the backburner (doesn't make sense at all) - If I wanted to learn about corporate stuff, I'd have majored in MIS. Everyone I know personally who has an IT degree do not have jobs in the IT field. Talking to these people, doing some soul searching so to speak made me realize around February that I did not want to continue pursuing this.
Now I have to decide what it is I want to change to, or eventually change to officially. I'm leaning towards English actually, because I enjoy literary based things, took AP English all 4 years of high school and passed both AP English exams - and I think I'd be somewhat happier in a more literary based degree program. I figure if I'm going to be in college, I might as well major in something I somewhat enjoy. And as far as what I'm going to do with an English degree... *shrug*, like I said above, it'll just be a degree, who knows what I'll do but it doesn't have to be English-related. I don't know, life's really confusing and no one hands you a road map, whatever happens happens. Sorry for the length, I hope someone read all that. =\
