Metroid Prime 2 is the Donkey Kong Country 2 of this era.
-Both are classic Nintendo franchises modernized(not necessarily a good thing) by Western developers.
-Both are sequels made relatively quickly.
-Both, while well made, offer little over the previous games. They are cookie cutter sequels without much soul, for lack of a better word.
I still disagree with this. I don't think "well, it's a good game but it doesn't live up to the previous ones" because I don't think it's a good game period. The mechanics and art design are great, without a doubt, but the level design is just terrible. If it was more of the same, at least I could enjoy it on a superficial level, but the level layout is so boneheaded sometimes that I don't think the game is deserving of the "good but not great" reputation that it has.Quote:

I used to think that was it too, but then I went back and played through Prime again and loved it as much as always. Echoes just has some of the worst pacing I've ever seen in a game. Right from the very beginning, stuff just kind of happens because it has to, and switching between the light and dark worlds finally crossed the line between interesting and tedious backtracking (which Metroid has always toed to some degree but never crossed before).
The plot also suffers from this stuttery pacing. You pick up a signal, so you arrive on a planet... okay. You eventually encounter some black goo alien thingies that posses things... okay. Then you arrive at the crash site where the signal came from and everyone's dead... this is forgotten as soon as you leave the area and never comes up again. Then the Lumiwhatever ask you to exterminate the Ing (black thingies) and collect a bunch of stuff.
Then the plot comes to a dead halt for the rest of the game and there are no more developments whatsoever. Well, except for Dark Samus, but nothing comes of that. It's like Retro just forgot the game had a story half an hour into it.
All the elements of a good game are in Echoes, but they're put together with all the grace of a macaroni and construction paper picture.

How long is this game? I have clocked in a little over 13 hours now and am currently at the Quadraxis boss. I hope I am close to being done, I don't know how much more of this game I can take.
I agree with those who think MP1 was better than its sequel. One thing, however, I did love about MP2 was the cancerous sound when you left the safe-zone bubbles in the darkworld and the darkness started eating away at you. Such an awesome sound. After reading this thread I think I will replay MP1 tonight.

I just beat Prime 2 -- a little over 26 hours with 86%.
Great, great game until you beat the sanctuary temple.
The nine-key fetch quest was absolute crap. I have no idea why Retro thinks such a thing would be fun.
Unfortunately, once again, the ending totally sucked. Emporer Ing was cool, but the Dark Samus battle was totally anti-climatic.
I also hate the way Samus just walks away with a little wave after she returns to the light world. It's like her whole mission was just a pain in the ass. It all felt really rushed and ruined the atmosphere and feeling of importance the rest of the game worked hard to build.
Retro needs to play the original and Super Metroid, and take some notes on how to make a great ending.
And is it to much to ask for a Metroid game that actually features the bad-ass metroids of old? You know the kind that suck the life out of you before you know it. The kind that you run from in fear. The metroids in Prime were wimps and in Prime 2 they were practically non-existant.
I had this game, sold it then bought it again recently for $19.99 Canadian new at EB :)
