Square-Enix's Tokita was recently interviewed by the Japanese press about the upcoming GBA remakes of Final Fantasy I & II. The interviews in Dengeki Gamecube and Nintendo Dream revealed clues to future developments as well as gameplay changes in I & II. Snippets follow:
Dengeki:
"FFIII is not going to remain sealed away for the rest of time, we're just carefully considering the timing of a release. Personally, if I have the chance, I'd like to get things moving, but because it's taking so long, people have big expectations - if we change it too much, people will complain, but if we just release it as is, we'll probably still get complaints..."
"Honestly, we did originally include a save & heal point in the legendary last dungeon. But debug staff at that time complained that the game was too easy with that included, so the producer asked for it to be taken out."
Nintendo Dream:
"When we spoke with Nintendo, they were very keen for us to remake III."
"There was the possibility for us to release these games as part of the Famicom Mini series, but we thought that the dungeons in II are hellishly difficult. so wouldn't be fun to play nowadays..."
"The illustration for the game was produced with the aim of attracting attention from a younger audience. We acknowledge that there were pros and cons of doing this, but we wanted to target the main users of GBA directly."
"Regarding skills, previously when magic skills were raised, strength would decrease, but this time we've got rid of that and added the ability to make multiple characters to improve the game balance. Levelling up also feels considerably faster now."
"If you want, you can still make a party full of white mages, like before, but whether you can finish the game with that is a different matter (laughs). But if you are that way inclined, please feel free to try."
Does anyone have a full translation of the two interviews?
