I was reeled in with Space Invaders, and the Atari 2600, but it was'nt until Miyamoto introduced Donkey Kong, that I was hooked. The game was just so far above anything before it, and it had me so hooked, that I spent $18 in an arcade one evening with a friend.
Yea, Defender Stargate. It came out in the early 80's and was, and probably still is one of the greatest reflex games ever created. I thought about that game 24-7 at the time. It was number one till SMW took gaming up many notches. I also blame my addiction to games on Nintendo.

I'd probably say Joust or even Megamania on the Atari 2600. I used outscore my sister so bad that my mother would punish me to stop that from happening. I'm talking 2 hours for one ship!!
Also, Hyper Dyne Side Arms and Black Tiger established ME as a gamer with some talent. Amazing to see how times have changed somewhat.

Super Mario Bros. Thata the very first games I can remember playing, my brother and me got a NES for Christmas in like 87' and I can just remember me and my brother playing Super Mario Bros. for HOURS and HOURS, its still one of the best games of all time.
My earliest video game memories come from Duck Hunt/Super Mario Bros, Contra, and RC Pro-Am. Honerable mention going to Mega Man and Tetris for Game Boy, and Street Fighter 2 in the arcades and on the SNES.

Other addictions:
I was addicted to Doom and Doom II for about three months or so a few years back. I literally have stack of FAQs and tutorials on how to make your own levels the size of a phone book.
I played nothing but THPS2 for an entire month, always striving for that perfect combo.
I played Crazy Taxi every day for an entire summer, then the following summer I did the same thing with Smashing Drive.
My current addiction is GTA3.
Demon Attack and Pitfall on 2600 left an impression on me, but it was Megaman, Bionic Commando, and Mario Brothers that sealed the deal for me. Most of the people in my neighborhood sucked at megaman and couldn't pass the iceman stage or the beginning of the Gutsman stage, and when I did it, I started to realize I had some skills.
That's so hard to even remember. When I was just a little squirt I played arcade games a lot( had my 7th birthday party at an Alladin's Castle). I remember especially loving the old Star Wars game, but also played a lot of Paperboy, Discs of Tron, Q-Bert, Centipede, Donkey Kong, and Donkey Kong Jr.
I got an NES for Xmas '88 and was hooked on Super Mario Bros and Duck Hunt. Then came Zelda and SMB2. Then I got Skate or Die and Mega Man 2, MM2 still being one of my all-time favorites. By then I was hooked(more like I finally possesed some gaming skill, I was always hooked).
There were a few years in high school where I lost touch with the world of video games. I played Shining Force 1 and 2, and the occasional NES or Genesis game during this time but not much else(This was during the days of the Saturn and early Playstation).
I didn't really get back into games until 98 when I got a new SNES and then a PS. As funny as it may seem, I think it was Tetris Attack that roped me back in.
All time? Gotta be Street Fighter II. It hasn't stood the test of time because of all the derivative games, but for my money that was the most addictive game ever released. Forget Tetris.
Most recently? Narcotic er, Record of Lodoss War: Advent of Cardice for DC. Once I got into it, I didn't touch another game or do anything else meaningful with my life until I'd gone through every nook and cranny, 56 hours later.
All time Addiction Hall of Fame has to include R4, NES Super Tecmo Bowl and King of Fighters '98.
though I had been playing for a few years before(if playing when you're 3 counts for much), the game that got me hooked was Zelda. I used to play that game for hours everyday. Just wandering around.
I also felt my first bit of rage when my cousin would tell me about the "other" super mario bros game in japan. then SMB 2 came out and I said, "this one?" and he said. "no"
