I'd put all three of them in my top 20 movies of the past 10 years. Unbreakable was my favorite of the bunch. Oddly enough, this was the first one of his movies I went to a theater to see. I didn't check out the others until I rented the DVDs. I'd put The Village in my top 10 most disappointing flicks of the past 10 years. I was genuinely bored through 90% of it, I went in with nothing spoiled (I didn't even look at this thread until after I watched it) and I still called the horrible twists about 10 minutes in. Then the one part that did interest me was ignored and forgotten for the last half hour or so of the movie.

Where in the hour and a half preceding the ending is anything shown hinting that these guys live in modern times and not the 19th century? It seems every reviewer in the world saw the ending coming a mile away and yet I felt like the most notable thing about the film was its astonishing ending.

Like some others mentioned the unnatural speach and the stories of beatings in city alleys were definitely tip offs.

What really got me thinking about the modern world possibility was that everything was just too new, too perfect. This supposedly old and rugged wilderness village was pristine. There were no signs of weathering or age. Every structure was in immaculate condition and many were obviously built using modern techniques. Clothes were peculiarly spotless and all looked to be brand new, especially the colored robes.

At first I wasn't sure if this was a sign of things to come, or just a bizarre choice in costume and set design, but it just jumped out of the screen and grabbed me. This town felt very different than those in most period pieces. Nothing was old. As time went on I became fairly sure that the movie was really set in modern times.

M. Night Shyamalan did an excellent job with the environment which really gave it the perfect mood. I also give him credit for delivering a twist that I highly doubt anyone suspected. Sure, there were flaws and plot holes, but with M. Why'd you give the story an A+ if there were flaws and plot holes? :confused:

I liked the movie. I don't care about plot holes or acting or anything; I cared about it being something that I could enjoy and something that had me talking about it afterward. On both counts, it succeeded.

I don't see how a director/writer/whoever somehow OWES it to you to outsmart you. If you're paying that much attention to the plot twists or something as opposed to just letting the story unfold, you're not a fan of movies. I'd say it's a good thing for Shyamalan that people critically analyze his films now - he totally fooled you all with Sixth Sense so now you think he has to fool you with every subsequent movie.

In a way, you're all pwned.

As long as you use every cent of that $100,000,000 to hire an army of whores the likes of which the world has never seen and not waste one cent on a script, sets or soundtrack.

Very good Movie 10/10 with that said you guys seem to overlook the "Hidden" messages and some key scenes.

1. Ivy was sent into the woods to retrive medicines so when she made it out of the Woods she would not see that she was living in Modern times.

2. Noah knew or was told the secrets of the Village, he was slow but I believe an elder let him out of the locked room. How else would he get out?, and know where the second suit was? He needed to stop and scare Ivy into reaching the real world. Things went wrong Noah was killed but by his death the legend of the creatures lived on.

3. It also implied that M Night playing the Deputy of the Nature preserve knew the project/experiment which was going on, as he claimed to have trouble in the past covering in up.

4. Lucious didn't believe the stories as he had broken the laws before, and knew his Mom was hiding something.

The whole disturbing thing was in creating a perfect Society they could not stop a murder from occuring in the Village and were denying their children proper medicine, and trying to escape from a past, which they were all haunted from, but even still they could not supress their secrets.

M Night must have watched some Episodes of Scooby Doo and Little House on the Prarie and the 90s version of the Brady Bunch Movies for inspiration.

If you gave me $100,000,000, I could make several movies, all of which would be several times better than The Villiage. What a shitty ass fucking movie. And I liked all of M. Night's previous movies quite a bit.

I haven't seen the movie yet, but it seems like the twist really robs you of something you invested almost 2 hours into. He builds up monsters, and they seem cool, and they have little quirks and there's rules to what they like and are attracted too. And he builds them in a convincing manner, which doesn't really make sense since in the end they're just muppets akin to Big Bird or Polkaroo (with live filling).

Applying this twist to Signs would be like the aliens are really mexicans in costume who are playing a joke on the world. It robs people of the story.

As I told my girlfriend after watching this, when I found out the monsters weren't real, I felt as if I had accidentally caught a glimpse of a stage actor changing clothes behind the curtain: All the previous magic of the performance was gone.
