Yeah, recovering a gamertag wipes it clean. They give this warning when you perform a gamertag recovery via the phone.

That's bullshit.
The last part is BS, but he's right about "recovering a gamertag wipes it clean". And yes, it sucks.
The only reason I had to 'recover', was because the xbox-live signup process crashed on me. Their fault, not mine!
Um, I dunno what you guys are talking about, but I use the recover option all the time when I travel to and from my friend's house and it works fine.
The way it works is that any achievement points earned when not connected to Xbox Live are gone. More specificly, if you earn points while not on Live, but then connect to Live at some other point you are fine. HOWEVER!!!! If you you earn points when not connected to live and then recover the gamertag before connecting to Live, the points are gone.
This happened to me when I got the Elite. I had taken my 360 to a friends lake house the day before and there was no internet. I got about 100 points on some game he had. The next morning on my way back I stopped at BB the day it came out to get the Elite. Got home, hooked up the Elite, and transfered my account. Evey achievement was there except the ones I had earned the day before. Tried to sign back in on my old 360 but had to recover the account therefore saving over that I had gotten the points.
elcpt: thanks for clearing that up. That is exactly what happened to me.
