Because the machine is a mess aparently.

Is there any posative news about the progress what-so-ever for the PSP? None of the developers are using the actual hardware, just emulation. They have no idea how long the battery will last they just have to guess, and now find out they also are in charge of the battery life 100%, and are looking at like 90 minutes now max. And who knows how techinicaly advanced the games are that are burning it out at 90 minutes. And if you watch the videos for the games they are all over the map in terms of graphical levels. Gran Turismo 4 Mobile makes it look like a spot on PS2 game, while Hot Shots Golf looks like a late generation PSone game.

What a mess.

Your freaking kidding me, the thing is having LESS than GameGear/Nomad battery life issues?! AND it's overheating in such a short amount of time?! Good lord, I thought potentially 5 or 6 hours battery life was bad enough, but it's been running out of juice and get hot enough to burn your hands in less-than and hour-and-a-half? Good lord...

No kidding, man, this company freaking pioneered the Walkman, there really is no excuse for this.

Still, with the multitude of issues having been having with PS1 and PS2s dying prematurely for years it doesn't suprise me their running into these kinds of monumental bumps in the road prepping the launch of a new system. But still, 1.5 hours battery life...systems overheating in such a short span of time like that...and they've already showcased it at E3 and the Tokyo game shows hyping it's launch. This is flabberghasting. :yuck:

I'd wager it'll do better if released in the holiday season than it would in March.

Not that I'm rooting for it to do anything other than fail miserably and take people's blind love for the PS brand down a notch.

The company that pretty much created the world of portable music, and the company whose head was furious that Nintendo was the company to come up with the GameBoy. Where has that gotten them?

It's taken them this long to respond to the GameBoy, and if this talk is true, their response is turning out to be a mess.

They're been rendered obsolete in the portable music market, Apple is the new Sony, the iPod is the new Walkman, and Sony's first real answer to the iPod, their recently released whatevertheyarecalled, are far too late and a total joke.

I like Sony, but when it comes to portable entertainment, it's almost amazing how much they're screwing up.

So how can this thing play UMD movies for less time than it can games?

The only thing I can think of is that it accesses the disc more during movies.

BTW, I am loving every minute of this thread. It's even better than the GT4 being delayed and neutered thread.

With 90 minutes you'd be fucked if you wanted to watch Dances with Wolves, Titanic, or Return of the King.

I know Sony wanted to one-up Nintendo with the PSP, but it's starting to seem more and more apparent that the PSP is just another in a line of overambitious handhelds that failed in some way or another against the GameBoy. Criticize Nintendo if you may for creating underpowered handhelds against the time they're released; for releasing an SNES-power handheld in an XBox age. But the GBA simply works, and is able to get by with battery power to spare and an attractive price point.

Sony should have drastically toned down the PSP during the design phase. A handheld with Dreamcast-level graphics, disk-based media, multimedia capabilities may sound awesome, but it seems that right now the technology isn't there to realistically support it. Sony should have aimed right for the SP/DS, not to overshoot themselves too early.
