Cell phones in the library

Okay , I needed to create a thread to see how much the times have changed, and if you guys see/hear this too.

EVERY DAY that I've been in the library this week and last, Ive had to put up with people having their cell phone volume jacked way high....by this I mean the ring tones and stuff. Whenever I go in the library or in class I either put my phone in silent mode or vibrate it. Why is it so goddamned hard for other people to do the same?
Like today, doing Calculus in the libraray , which for me takes some concentration. Some girl close by has a phone with a gay 50-Cent ring tone that she takes her sweet ass time to answer - it mustve played the tone like 10 times,and it was loud. She finally answers it " LIKE, OMGHI2U - I JUST GOT OUT OF THE TANNING SALON,BLAH,BLAH,BLAH".She talks for about ten minutes at which point I finally just moved.I probably shouldve growed a pair and told her too shut her fucking yap, but I didnt need the drama that early in the morn.
The fact is I see this a lot, way too much. Is this just a Florida thing or are a lot of you other guys putting up with this too?

What happened to the days when libraries were actually silent places to study?

I agree; it's a disgrace. At my school, the library is more like a common room, and so I avoid it like the plague. Problem is that a large majority of people in the library aren't actually working on things like calculus, and are much more laid back when doing there work, etc, so that phones don't bother them, so that they think that phones bothers no-one.
What can you do though?

I'm not the typical person my age though, so my view won't be widely shared throughout people my age.

There's a special place in hell reserved for people who use cell phones in libraries, movies and restaurants. I remember one time my girlfriend and I were eating at a Friday's or something and the guy at the table next to us started demonstrating every single ring tone his phone had for his family. After about the 8th or 9th ring tone (he let each one play for at least 10 seconds each) I leaned over and told him to turn off his goddamn phone. He complied but looked offended- tough shit.

you also should've smacked the phone outta his hand, and said "you like that, bitch? you like it?" he would've learned his lesson real well after that.

That would have been perfect, yes. Then I would have eaten his Jack Daniels chicken too.

Hehe, I need to follow suit and raise some hell like you I guess. The last time I caused a ruckuss concerning cell phones was at a gas station, with some fat bitch talking on the cell while pumping gas - which you guys proved to me I was in the wrong for :D

usualy have their cell turned up to the highest friggin degree because God almighty forbid they miss a call. If a person was an executive or a drug dealer I could see the importance. But you overhear the call, and often they are talking about "OMGOMGHI2U - I JUST GOT OUT OF THE TANNING SALON,BLAH,BLAH,BLAH" or "OMG DOOD WE ARE GUNNA GET SO WAYSTED AND LAAAAYEDD AT TEH FRAT PARTY TONIGHT!!! W007!"

Its not the worst thing in the world if casual calls or friends cant get in touch with you for a couple of minutes....gees.

Sometimes it's actually for the best. :)

I don't have a lot of that while in class. All my college teachers lost their shit if a phone rung while they were teaching.

I've seen some people get kicked out of class for the semester because they could never learn.

Messageing was treated just as harsh.

We've all been in situations where we've forgotten to silence/TURNOFF the phone. But the polite thing to do is just hurry up and turn it off and apologize, right? Right?

One day this guy's phone goes off in the middle of the prof's lecture. Everything stops in the entire class and everybody looks at him. Next thing we hear?

"Hullo?"
