Ali G Indahouse

Worst. Movie. Ever.

Seriously. The HBO show is awesome and I love it. But this...I mean, the first 10 minutes are amazing, but it turns out to be a dream Ali's having and once he wakes up, the movie turns to complete shit.

It features none of what made the show great- instead it's your typical "fish out of water" story with Ali being elected to Parliment. It had a laugh once in a while but otherwise it was so fucking bad it almost made my eyes bleed. If the whole movie was like the first 10 minutes it would have ruled.

Fans of the show should stay far the fuck away. No respeck.

He should have made a Borat movie.

Borat did have a cameo.

Oh, and the movie also had Rhona Mitra in it. You might remember her as the first chick Edios hired to play Lara Croft at trade shows. Damn, she's fine.

Neither of these things could save this movie. Not that I expected it to be art or anything, but I at least expected it to be funny.

What is this Ali G thing about anyway? At first it looked like a show starring some stupid rapper guy. Now I read that it's a comedian playing three parts? Is it that funny?

The part that makes it funny is that it's real (or it really, really seems that way). Borat is a fresh-off-the-boat man from Kazakstan (wtf) who tries to learn the culture of Western civilization, but is really trying to make the people teaching him look like fools. There's the fashionable gay guy who does interviews with fashion industry people and similar typoe things and gets them to make fools of themselves, and his rapper persona gets interviews with world leaders and other upstanding people (Andy Rooney, Ralph Nader, etc) and gets THEM to make fools of themselves.

Yeah, I thought the same thing when I first saw the commercials...thought it was going to be some kind of club culture show starring some DJ or something. I couldn't have been more wrong.

And yes, it's that funny.

It's an interview show starring British comedian Sacha Baron Cohen in one of his three personas: Ali G, a dim-witted gangsta rapper; Borat, Kazakhstan's #1 reporter; and Bruno, a flaming fashion reporter from Austria.

Cohen interviews different people, usually from the entertainment and political fields. He's actually interviewed some really high-profile types. The catch is that the people being interviewed have no idea who he is and that it's all a joke- they think it's a legit interview. Cohen will start weird and asking more and more off-the-wall questions, and the best part is that he's is a master of staying in character and keeping a straight face throughout the entire interview, no matter how crazy things get. It's brilliant.

He actually got too well-known in England and couldn't really do his interviews there anymore. Then he came to the States, where he was pretty much unknown. Season one of his HBO show is out on DVD...since you work at Best Buy now, you should use that discount of yours and pick it up without delay. Great stuff.

All those American expressions he uses like "WestSide" he came up with because he used to listen to Tim Westwood's Hip-Hop show in London where black people from London and environs used to ring up requesting tunes, speaking like they were from Los Angeles and pretending to be black Americans. Westwood himself is white as a sheet but talks with a black London accent. It's something to hear! KRS One couldn't get over hearing it.

Ali-G actually interviewed Westwood in his first series of interviews but Westwood objected and it was never broadcast. It would be worth getting the original interviews from the Eleven O' Clock Show from 1998/1999 if you don't already have them. I think he actually sets up the interviewee with normal questions in a more normal style before moving on to the stuff you see on the shows.
