When the hell is Paradise X coming out? I really enjoyed Earth X and Universe X, waiting for the finale Paradise X.
I read Watchmen when it came out. Want a real kick in the head? Read it in the late 80s, when there's nothing but The Dark Knight to compare it to, and read it monthly. The Rorschach issue in particular, when it stands alone without a hundred pages of story in front and to come, can really mess with your head.

It's been out for months. I have both of them.
Coupla things I've read recently:
Earth X: Impressive, they constructed a story that tied together Marvel history and not only did it actually work but it was written pretty damned well, too. Didn't come off as typical comic writing which dragged down some other readings like E is for Extinction and Avengers History (or something... it was about different era Avengers being thrown together). The book did have a problem with the artist being totally unable to draw any sort of a cohesive action sequence, he's (them, whatever) ten times worse than Shirow at laying out fight sequences. If it wasn't for the words describing what was going on I wouldn't have any idea what happened in some of those fights, and I'm still not 100% sure what happened during the final showdown. A few people died and all I really know is who killed them.
I want to read the following two but I'm also a bit wary because Earth X seemed like it wrapped itself up so perfectly that for anything else to follow would be just typical American comic milking. But I'll give them a shot just because the first was good enough.
Avengers Ultimate (collections 1 & 2): Eh, it's alright. The revamped character ideas are cool and the whole infighting with Wasp and Giant Man was well done, but the overall story come across as a Hollywood script for an introductory superhero movie. The alien war thing felt kinda pretty half-assed and tacked on, like they really wanted a villian but were unable to procure anyone that was interesting or cool, so they just tossed in some old-school shape-shifters so that at least something would happen. There's also a higher rate of people that are assholes than most Marvel comics which has simultaneously made me not like a number of them while also making them a lot more interesting.
Good potential but I wouldn't pay for it. Maybe if they have some excellent story arcs I'll care but aside from the good underlying ideas it didn't seem like it was going to go in a direction I'd like it to.
Preacher: I was into reading comics when this came out but for whatever reason I just never cared enough to even look at the issues, but man do I remember a lot of hype for it. I literally just finished reading book one and I feel like an ass for ignoring this series for this long; it's goddamn fucking fantastic! There hasn't been much story yet and really thinking about it it's got mini-arcs like most comics, but the writing is phenomenal and weaves everything together so beautifully it doesn't feel like I'm reading seperate issues with seperate stories.
The art isn't all that but it gets the job done, every time I get to one of the fantastic painted covers and then see a page from the next comic it strikes me how much there's no destinctive style to the art, and even a lot of the designs are just clumsy. But then I start reading again and realize that I don't care because Jesse is one of the best characters in comic books ever. He's amazing. He's who I want to be when I grow up. He's got this... class to everything he says that I just admire.
And to that, couple questions:
Is the Preacher story done?
How many volumes total are there (so far, if it's not over)?
Sandman: Endless Nights: Pretty good overall. Some of the stories were good, others were blah, some of the art was good and some of it was blah. One thing that struck me was how different the characters were in each artist's style and how I wanted an almagation amongst them because they all did different ones well. Milo Manara did the best Desire I've seen (but I also like his art a lot anyway), while the story following his had a retarded looking Desire but a cool Destruction and Death, and the one before his had a pretty blah Death. Rather all over the place, it intrigued me but not to the point where I want to read the whole series. I do want to know the story but lord knows I don't want to go through all the many books, especially if there's a bunch of stories on the level of the Despair one. Ah well, maybe I'll slowly read through them at Border's or something.
Now to figure out which one of my roommates owns Watchmen so I can borrow that next.
