So I've been watching this show lately, as my brother received it as a Christmas present. At first I assumed the show was a shallow attempt at espionage, or a terrible spoof on the James Bond formula. This seems to be a fault of mine when judging television series because I did the same for Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel and it turns out they were some of the best written television programs of our generation, offering metaphor, strong themes, sex, violence and humour all in one weekly one hour episode. Both of these shows went off the air in the last two years and a void was left in television for me.
Then this Christmas happened and I began to watch this show. I've watched the entire first season of the series and I am hooked. I don't find the character or spy atmosphere as engaging as the fiction of Buffy or Angel, but the writing is very good. I get the action, the drama, and the solid material I miss from those two shows once again. I was worried that the entire show would be an excuse to get Jennifer Garner into skimpy costumes and parade around on the screen but that simply didn't happen. Don't get me wrong, there're plenty of times when that happens, but it isn't the base or even the focus of the show. It focuses more on the characters and relationships of the characters, which is why the show, I believe, is so successful in avoiding the pitfall that Thieves did a couple years back. You need to feel something for the characters in a show like this, and what they're going through. And this show provides that.
Anyway, I'm really liking the characters. I like SD6's techie, Arman. He debriefs them on all of the gadgets and also the reporter. I also like Sloane quite a lot too, and I believe him and Sark play amazing villains. Some of the strongest I've ever seen in a television series.
Does anybody else watch this show?If not check it out. It's been described as 24 for a younger generation, but I find that description completely inaccurate, so don't listen to it.
