Honestly, yes, but even that game has plenty of the problems I mentioned. I dealt with them partly because of the hype, partly because I was rather enthralled with the style of gameplay (the whole stealth thing was pretty new back then), partly because I loved the visual designs, atmosphere and concept, and partly because Kojima's storytelling wasn't quite as retarded back then. Plus, Snake was a pretty damn cool character.
Still, there were planty of things about the game that irked me. The aforementioned "love on the battlefield" crap, the vomit-inducing "Live, Snake...LIVE!" garbage, the lack of gameplay in favor of cutscenes/codec conversations (every time I got into playing a certain section it would be over and, bam, another cut-scene)...I could go on and on.
MGS would be the greatest series ever if they just killed Heido Kojima.
