Zelda 2 was a complete letdown when it was released. Anyone who tells you different is someone who didn't completely love Zelda 1 or played Zelda 2 years after the fact.
To give you some sort of analogy that modern gamers can understand. It would be like absolutely loving Halo 1 ... and 4 years later Bungie release Halo 2 as an above-average RTS game. The shock of having something you love reformulated into something else is hard to equate into terms.
Zelda 2's style would've worked alot better on the SNES (like most NES games did) The overworld on the NES version was primitive, and the towns were not interactive at all. The only thing that was redeeming was the magic system and to some degree the EXP.
In retrospect, Zelda 2 seems like a fun break from the "typical" Zelda style game .. but at the time, Zelda 2 should have been LttP and not Zelda meets Metroid/Dragon Warrior.
