Another vote for import Gigawing 2. Believe me, having the voices in there makes a difference, as it makes the experience that much more fun. RIFUREKUTOOOOO REIZAAAAAAAA!!!!!
As many people said, GW2 has an awesome soundtrack. That combined with pretty graphics, several different ships and 2 different ways to play (Reflect Laser or Reflect Force) round things out.
Mars Matrix may have the unlocking gameplay down pat, but GW2 is just more fun IMO.

There's plenty to unlock and discover in GW2 -- It just isn't presented in such a clear and straight-forward fashion as Mars Matrix.

Giga Wing 2 is a completely different game when you're going for scores. I felt indifferent about it until I focused on scoring, but once I did it took over my life. The past few weeks have been nothing but GW2.
And actually, I'm not a fan of GW2's soundtrack. Once you notice that the levels just repeat the same few lines, it gets on your nerves.

Tough question...
I guess I've got to go with Giga Wing 2.
GHRAAAAAVITY BOOOOOMBAAAHH!!!!!

The only schmup of this type I have is Gunbird 2, unless Cannon Spike counts...

Bystander, you are an ass. The theory holds true.
Mars Matrix.

no seriously, on the Dreamcast, the import GigaWing (thats the one i got), not 2, the 1st one....its hard to describe, but it just has a much more "solid" feel to it than Mars Matrix or GW2.
its a pure point racker game. reminds me of a Saturn shmup.
to anybody that hasnt tried it because of the lackluster graphics, give it a try, i bet you'll like it better than the flashy (and a lil to easy) sequel.......

In order:
1. Mars Matrix
2. Zero Gunner 2
3. Giga Wing 1 (a very pleasant surprise)
4. Giga Wing 2
5. Gunbird 2
6. Twinkle Star Sprites

Mars Matrix or import Gunbird 2, Mars Matrix or Gunbird 2 ... I ...can't...decide... It's a tie, i can't choose between the two.
My definite second favorite is Zero Gunner 2.
Twinkle Star Sprites is pretty addicting and Bangai-O freakin' rules, but I don't really consider those as straight up shooters.
