None of what is being said in this thread is bullshit, however, most of it is exaggeration. If you don't go into situations with other races with a slight bit of caution and stereotype, your just not human. Everyone should. Its the smart thing to do.
However if you go into every situation under the assumption that this shit is gonna fly (race becoming an issue in a argument, etc...) your just bringing it onto yourself, because no matter how you think you appear, everything your saying to the other person is so far out of context that your simply gonna be categorized as what you avoiding in the first place.
So I take it you've never been in a bar full of frat boys?Quote:

Protecting yourself, however, does not require tacking on a whole list of sterotypes that aren't even related to what you're seeing. Joust didn't say "s/he dresses like an idiot" he said "s/he's an idot," there's quite a difference. Already there's assumptions about their intelligence, soon enough you're looking for further facts to support your case. Gradually you've got a stack of bad memories and generalizations all heaped on someone you haven't even talked to yet. The more stereotypes you have ready and waiting for someone who fits the profile the more likely you are to start acting on them before you need to, and that is a problem.Quote:

He talked about all the "lost urban youth" and the problems he has with that culture and decided that that culture was one where it was "cool" to be "dumb, mean, and selfish"
=/ thanks for putting words in my mouth. That's very awesome of you.Quote:

Its ok though, we know you're from Seattle, nice little sparkling town with coffeehouses and yuppie parties. ;)
It all boils down to individual responsibility, to try to blame anything on culture, race, society or anything that takes responsibility of the offending asshole just justifies and perpetuates their antisocial behaviour. I've lived in the "ghetto" all my life until I moved to Japan (where I live a different type of ghetto), and it's easy to blame some of the crap that goes on aroung you on groups (especially when you're getting burglarized or having your car broken into, and don't know who the actual culprits are.) I've had my own personal battles with racist thoughts and opinons forming inside of me, but I know too many people who don't fit the profiles I set up, and they become invalid.
Moving to the different culture in Japan I've been the recipient of racial and cultural stereotyping, and have dished it out in equal fervour out of culture shock. The thing to remember is that if you're having a problem with someone, it's with an individual, not the group (real or imagined) that they're a part of.
To deal with the cheese problem it would probably be best to calmly explain your position and try to reach a better cheese distributing policy, than being equally defensive of your anti- manual cheese paste removal policy. He probably reacted out of embarressment of his probably learned and not intentional anti-social cheese aquiring behaviour. He probably felt as if you were picking on him and he did nothing wrong. if you had explained --calmly-- that eating cheese out of the tub with your hands could be unsanitary --at the moment of the incident--, instead of just letting him do it, and informing the other angry cheese deprived person of the culprit's unsanitary actions you could have avoided this episode of "the real world."
