I got this. I like it. It's prettier unreal. Lack of maps will be made up for by users thanks to the included level editor. I take it no one has reversed their position?
I may get around to picking this up in the near future, if not only to try my hand at the map editor. I spent the last few weeks of my freshman year dedicated to making a map to pass the time. It can be a tedious and painstaking effort, but damn if it isn't rewarding when you finish a decent map. I lost the link, but last I checked, the map had been downloaded well over 1000 times.
Yeah, I wish all games included their level editors. The tools packed with Crysis are ridiculous. Powerful enough to make a completely different game, but easy enough that designing and terraforming a landscape is like playing with playdoh. I haven't tried the Unreal one yet, but I'm glad it's there so the game will continue to have life.
I really like the gameplay for DM and CTF, hoping into a game and throwing out a predicted rocket, bouncing someone up in the air then firing another rocket where you know they are going, and as you head out to face someone else or try to catch their respawn as you see their death message, comes so easily if you played UT... unfortunately everything surrounding it though is terribly done. Navigating the menus and the server browser is so bad, it's amazing. vCTF and Warfare could be fun, but with bots it's just an ultimate exercise in frustration. UT99 is probably one of my favorite games, so when in specific gametypes it feels really good. No matter what Epic patches, they aren't going to turn it into some game that everyone has to play... but they can polish up something that has always been at it's core inherently brilliant.
Epic's problem is that they are too content to let the UT formula go unchanged.
All I see here is a company trying to show off a new engine and cash in on the nostalgic '99 fans like me while also trying to keep from ruffling the feathers of the remaining 2004 community.
Where is the innovation we saw in UT 2004 (the "second" UT, according to them)? From what I've seen, the only thing that even comes close to innovation here are some of the new vehicles. I hear they make the old vehicles that stuck around look downright dull in comparison.
Maybe the mod community can save their ass, but until that starts to happen, I won't be buying this.
It's true that this is the same formula with better graphics, some badass new vehicles (some of which are really creative) and a couple new modes. But there aren't exactly a ton of imitators any more, so it sort of stands out in how well it preserves the old Unreal flavor.
When Unreal was popular I kind of didn't like it because deathmatch games were overshadowing single player. Now that's not the case and this feels less like one in a crowd.
this over the shoulder mod just sold me on UT3
