10 years ago, a transition from Analog television to Digital television was set by our government. The plan was for anyone that owns an analog television, to purchase a converter to watch digital television through their older sets. The official date was set for the year 2006.

If you plan on buying a cheap television in the near future, it's time to save a little cash and get an HDTV.
my parents just got a 60'' plasma flat panel hdtv with tivo and the hdtv dvd player, even just watching a commercial makes me drool. It just defies anything else tv wise that ive seen or known before, it even makes me consider moving back home after i graduate nyu, well maybe not that.

If the end of 2006 was when analog would end then you start enforcing all sets to be made with digital tunners in like 2000
the sets still arent really affordable compared to "standard" tvs which is the other big problem
I think if they really wanted this analog 2006 blackout to happen with out major public outcry they should have done more to get digital sets into users homes
ok it seems to cut off really only effects those people who don't have cable
still I think the article is right that the government needs to step in and do SOMETHING I don't know what but at the place were currently at the country is not ready for a switch over to all digital television
I honestly have no idea why they've even been selling analog sets these past 2-3 years. Everyone knew this date was coming, but they continued to sell soon to be outdated technology.
I'd love it if they stuck to the 2006 date, but I know they won't. Oh well, at least by the end of 2005 DirecTV will have all the major markets' locals in HD as well as probably about 15-20 more HD channels than what currently exists. I'm really curious to see what happens with reruns once a lot of these channels switch over to a 16:9 feed.
The thing, though, is that digital TV and HDTV are two different things. If you're purchasing a new TV, getting a digital TV is wasting your money. Save a bit more, and go for the HDTV. Otherwise, the money you just spent was wasted. (IMHO.)Quote:

I am confused by this. I subscribe to "digital cable television" yet my TV is rather old. Also, the three other TVs in my house don't even have cable boxes. So that mean in two years I'll have to buy a tuner for each TV that isnt hooked up to the main box down stairs? And the government is enforcing this? Wtf?

No. This only applies to over the air broadcasts. Cable companies can still send whatever the hell they want down their pipe and it doesn't matter. It's just that once this is enforced you will not be able to set up your old rabbit ears and get a signal, you will need to buy a tuner that will take the new digital signal out of the air and send it to your tv either digitally or analogously (is that even a word?).Quote:
