Donkey Kong

The C-64 version (Atarisoft) of Donkey Kong, is the best home conversion that I've played. I was really disappointed with the NES version.

I never knew that Ocean did a conversion of Donkey Kong. Has anyone played this? How does it compare to the Atarisoft game?

I've played both the Intellevision and 2600 versions of Donkey Kong. Neither were that impressive.

The original arcade game had four different boards. A lot of the home versions (ColecoVision, NES, 7800) are missing the pie factory level. Some versions (for example, the 2600) are missing two boards.

I think Ocean's port only came out in Europe which is probably why you haven't seen it. It's a decent port but I prefer the look and feel of the Atarisoft one which seems more faithful to the arcade.

Did Coleco's exclusivity deal run out, allowing Nintendo to publish it on their console? Or did Nintendo get around it by publishing "DK Classics" instead of "DK"?

I'm pretty sure there were seperate NES carts for DK and DK, Jr., so I'd guess they just let the exclusivity run out.

My guess is that in the deal with Coleco, Nintendo was still free to release their own games however they wanted. I don't think they mention any sort of time frame in Game Over but I haven't read it in a while.

Cool thread, I was trying to remember "that mario game with the red yellow and blue girders" last night while I was half conscious

I loved DK Jr. though it is the one game for whatever reason i can't get past the second level but yet every few months i decide to torture myself again...in fact i'm gonna do that now.

The NES first hit the states in 1985, while the Colecovision was retired in 1984 due to the game industry crash.

With Colecovision being so similar to MSX1, it could have had probably gone on for another year if not for the crash. Some of the MSX1's arcade ports could've been brought over quite easily.

The Kong also appears in Mario Kart and Diddy Kart. (oops, didnt read that last sentence)

And damn, Donkey Kong Hockey. I see Nintendo was whoring even way back when.
