It's a really fun and natural sort of difficulty setting system, I love all the different abilities and subtle ways to boost the Yoshi's happiness meter, I even like the Yoshi singing music. The only thing I can think of is that people either:
A. Didn't learn how to play the game and just raced through it eating all the fruit they came across, making the game short and fairly easy
B. Though it was too "kiddy", a really great reason to not play good games
