I'm about to order Sin and Punishment and I was wondering if I can use the Gameshark to play it. I've heard conflicting reports and I want to know if I need the adapter or if I can use my son's Gameshark. Thanks in advance for the help.

I don't see why it wouldn't work. If all else fails, you can cut the tabs on the N64 or mod the cart.
Not all GameSharks will work. My version 3.3 GameShark works, but an older one I'd picked up from EB would not. I don't recall specifically what version that was, but if your son's GS is 3.3 you're all set.
