Jumping into PC gaming with...

Ghost Recon!

What the hell I was thinking? I know not. I do know the game is pretty sweet. I've just never felt the need to own a PC game until I ran into this today in Wal-Mart. I remember playing Rainbow Six a little on PSX, and liking it. I always thought the controller was limiting on that game, so I've now got me this...thing to dissect.

Very complicated, but it feels like it'll be worth it. I also figure if I can make it through something as complicated as this on my first go, I can make it through anything. :)

My suggestion: Ignore Ethugg. :)

Those style of games are quite good (and much better on PC), but I'm not into them as I tend to suck at planning out missions. However, without the planning of missions it just wouldn't be as much fun.

Now what exactly do you mean by "Jumping into PC gaming"? Is this honestly the first PC game you've played?

I can't possibly imagine playing this with a controller.

I know it's coming for XBOX, and that fact weighs heavy on my heart, because what if they pull off good control? I just don't see it happening...

Eep! Oh my, I must say, you have some catching up to do on some incredible games! Besides the ever cool Doom 2, of course. ;)

If you want, give us a genre and we can spout off some cheap great games! Like most of Lucasarts adventure game lineup (which retails basically $15 a game from their site). I'm playing through Grim Fandango as we speak, taking a break after getting stuck on some minor puzzle.

Well, I was eyeing this game that looked like Diablo with cartoon characters. I forget the name of it now, but it looked fun, and funny to boot.

I suppose Diablo esque (I've seen it played a zillion times, I just never jumped in the chair), and Tactical games would be my forte.

The problem with games like Ghost Recon and such as your first computer game since Doom is that all the more complex tactical games presume you've played a ton of games like it. "Disect" is a good word for it, those things can get complicated.

Personally, I've always liked the first person shooter genre since Doom, but the move to more tactical, real world situations has left me cold. Give me Giants or Serious Sam and I'm a happy person, blasting away at as many non-human beasties as they can put on the screen at once.

Actually, I would recommend Giants on PC. It's an action game with a minor bit of tactics involved, and a comparitively simple control scheme. I find that once you've got the hang of one control setup, most games can be tailored to it, no matter how complex. Pretty much, once you've learned on first person shooter you've learned them all, subtle game nuances aside.

I'm waiting for Xbox enhanced version of Ghost Recon myself right now, but the PC version tempts me from the power of its mission editor... Hurry up with Xbox Live already MS, I don't have much willpower. :p

In my opinion, Rainbow Six played great on the dreamcast controller. I don't think that will be an issue for me at least.
