My guess is that Japan is very different. Konami is at least as good as any other Japanese publisher now. I challenge you to name a Japanese company that can match Konami's entries in the Castlevania, Metal Gear Solid, Suikoden, Gradius, and Silent Hill series during this generation. Capcom has Resident Evil, Devil May Cry and maybe Onimusha. Sega has Panzer Dragoon Orta and Virtua Fighter. Square has nothing. Namco has Ridge Racer and Soul Calibur.
