Well, my guess is that since he was a young officer, he probably didn't have the experience to quickly deal with the situation properly. It is a little eye-opening knowing that this was a simple routine stop; the assailant was probably speeding or committing some other minor infraction.

It would appear so. He seemed to panic, instead of taking the necessary action to defend himself. He should have opened fire as soon as the guy reached for his rifle. Any person with decent knowledge of a handgun, would have had open season on this guy at that range.

i think the scenario you described would have been better than what ultimately happened dontcha think? and im sure the gun he had (if its the one that MVS showed) isnt exactly legal, so finding that in his truck had the officer shot first might have swayed things in his favor anyway.
