1up got to spend some time with the game by playing a demo level (Cutman) which is included in the Megaman X advance disc they received.

Control said to be very tight and mostly faithful to the original despite the new softer look. Said strategies you used in the NES rev will hold up. The visuals are nicely updated to enhance the theme (Cutman's environment is has mech trees, ect.), tougher attacks from enemies and boss (Cutman has a new boomerang attack)
Sounds like gaining weapons will also allow you to explore branching paths in previous levels:

The level designs are somewhat more ambitious than in the NES game. Not only are they longer, but they feature what appear to be alternate paths, blocked off by special blocks that can only be destroyed by specific weapons. (These paths remain tantalizingly inaccessible for now, since there are no Robot Master weapons available in the demo.) There are also mid-level checkpoints marked by tiny flags -- the harder the difficulty level, the fewer checkpoints appear.
Also a new boss named "Oilman" is said to have a "tar baby" appearance which Capcom may alter for the U.S. release.

ha Wow. Uh yeah, Oilman will almost have to get a redesign now. Too much of a resemblence to the offensive 1920s and '30s blackface drawings.
