I'm with Josh. You will almost always get a better sound from a small tube amp than a small solid state amp. Solid state practice amps are usually so budget that they are nothing but cheap crap. The flat sound will only bore you a week from now and you won't feel like practicing.

A good tube amp should sound good on every setting and be a joy to play, even if all you're doing is plucking strings and random chords.

Orange is a very good brand and trusted by virtually all professional musicians. The list of people who have used them is like a mile long. However if you don't want to drop that kind of cash, just watch pawn shops. Eventually some kid is going to pawn the antique tube amp that his gramps gave him because it is noisy (which 50%-80% of can be fixed) then you are in for the win. If it doesn't have Marshall or Fender on the front, you can get it for a 100 or less.

BTW, IF you do buy a tube amp, don’t stick your hand in the back of it and poke around. Unlike your playstation, some of the capacitors in a tube amp can dump enough current into you to stop your heart. This can kill you.
