Yeah, get torrents of the show. I played by the rules and was underwhelmed. I'm not anti-Stern or anything, but forget paying for it.
Did you not get any value out of the music or sports programming?
I listened to a little of the History of Howard Stern this morning, and it's safe to say that I'll be listening to other programming for the rest of the week. It's very well produced, but overall, it's just a complete bore (so far, at least).
My main problem: It's just the very height of narcissism. I know, this is to be expected coming from Stern and his crew of ass-kissers and sycophants, but if you turned this on not knowing who Howard Stern was, you'd think he had cured AIDS, cancer, and world hunger combined. It started at 6AM, and by 8:40 they had just gotten to his freshman year in high school. They would play music from the era in the background and examine social and political changes and how they related to Howard. They interviewed everyone under the sun (even childhood friends) and it just got silly, how heavy-handed and serious it was.
Besides, for long-time fans like me, this is just boring and drawn out. Stern normally talks about how he grew up ALL THE TIME. The whole show is built around how his childhood shaped his life. You know all this shit already- you hear him talking about it every day. Now, you're just getting it with every single tiniest detail included.
Hopefully it'll get more interesting once they cover his early radio years and start playing some clips of his early broadcasts.
BTW, during the commercials playing during the History of Howard Stern, they're playing commercials for the History of Howard Stern. Um, hello, I’m listening to the shit, assholes.
Dole nailed it. I can't wait until they stop playing this 24/7.
Super boring. At least they had Robin and Artie sitting in when Howard gives his commentary. At least a chance for some life to it.
I tried listening to a little more during lunch, and my opinion of it is even worse, if anything. Some guy who was friends with Howard when he was a kid told a 10 minute story about how Howard was "irreverent" even as a kid and how he called a handicapped guy "Screwy Louie." And it was treated like they had unearthed some fascinating nugget of Howard history. This special is the most boring, inane piece of shit I've ever heard.
And I'll bet anything that, when they come back from vacation, every call and email they put through will praise the History of Howard and just talk non-stop about how awesome it was. I'll truly be shocked if they let one negative comment get through.
There was one good moment of the special. In recounting the moment Howard lost his virginity, they had Crackhead Bob read Howard's first sexual experience from Private Parts. Listening to Howard singing when he was a kid and the King Smaltz's Bagel Hour was very, very hard to listen through.
I hope the special gets better as the week goes by.
Mark me under the "the History of Howard Stern" is ridiculously boring category. The majority that I have heard just isn't interesting to listen to. I did hear a portion today about him coming to Detroit that gave some pretty cool history behind that station and the stuff that he did there, but it was nothing mind blowing, and nothing I would rather listen to over his regular show.
The special did force me to listen to Bubba for the first time seriously today, and he had an awesome interview with Al Harris from the Packers. That dude is fucking awesome, and just because of that interview I'm going to give Bubba a fair chance and start listening to his show more.
They have been hyping this special for a long time and content wise, it's nothing impressive. I listen to an hour or so yesterday and today and like you said, it is nothing mind blowing.
Bubba has a really good show, you have to listen a few times to get all the "Bubba lingo" down. He has a few of his bits and parody songs on itunes. I would check out:
"Catholic town"
"Live Like You Were Fryin'"
"I'm Not a Homo Baby"
"Howard's Bitch"
"Hulk Where Did You Go"
and if you like Ferrall... "Ferrall Interviews Jesus"
