FuryFox is right though, just like a Batman spoof, this has less to do with what you think of the character itself and more to do with just being a funny take on a property you think you already know.

I've been thinking about it. I have some fantasy ideas that are a bit distanced from the more typical PA-style gag strips. I'm more intimidated by the website construction, whatever's needed to update a site efficiently, and managing all the bandwidth concerns (and then eventually advertising). I think having a partner would definitely help some things, especially if they were proficient in areas I'm not.

I respect Robobo for updating frequently and from it seems, functioning like it should. Especially since you both probably have other obligations.

Also, as I've gone a really long time without using any smilies in a post and it might be hard to tell because of that, I should just say that I don't hate Robobo or anything. I just think you guys (mostly Jonas) should try to chill out.

Seriously, jealous of what, anyone and everyone can and has a web comic up. Robobo is boring and needs a shot in the arm. My comic is hardly ripping off your "world", which seems more to me like Futurama with a less threatening Bender and without the other interesting characters or environments. Rezo I admire a lot for putting so much into getting his work out there and putting lots of thought into the content, which is rare for web comics.

No, putting a webcomic up is a lot of work, and getting and then retaining readers is even harder. You'll have to put up a website, and maintain it. If you don't know any web programming updating the website might be a lot of grunt work. Not only that you may find out that there isn't much of a market for your art style or humor and nobody comes back after awhile, anyway. The risk that your artwork and creative entity become failures. I'm not talking to the 10 people on TNL who read Galleria, I'm talking about it never even finding an audience in a field of about 50 million people.

Not to mention that you have to have a schedule you keep to, which means every Monday night and Thursday night you're working on your concepts and comic instead of spending time with friends (unless they're with you doing shit while you work) or working on more frugal projects (I'm starting up my own press soon and put it on hold while I work out these comics with jonas). Missing comics is like telling your audience to fuck off because you take them for granted (Butternutsquash is a good example of this. They worked on their print book, a piece of merchandise, for over three months forgetting about their audience and expected them to keep up with their faithful viewing. Obviously their comic has lost a good chunk of viewers because of it, which means their book sales are probably not too hot) and trying to push merchandise and ask for donations is overtly telling your audience you're bandwagon phonies trying to make some quick cash off of them instead of being there to simply mildly entertain them through crude drawings.

People say there're two types of webcomics. Those who want to be a big PA, PVP or CAD style comic and live off of their work and those who just want to have fun doing the work but really there is only one style of comic. People who want to be like PA, PVP and CAD while enjoying their work. People want their work to reach people enmass, and having enough of an audience to produce money is hard, but also a measure of success. Being a quality comic nobody cares about doesn't sound like a lot of fun to anybody.

Anyway, thats what the big deal is about web comics. The people who draw stick figures and brand it as creative license aren't going to go very far and there's a lot more to webcomics than random wackiness or cursing a lot and the game changes a hell of a lot when you're putting yourself out there a minimum of one or two days a week (or more).

I don't think you're jealous, but sometimes I feel like you're giving us some resentment because we've been able to muster any kind of substancial audience.

It's not courage it's motivation.

It isn't though. Usually. Or, at least, it shouldn't be. The amount of work really depends on what you're doing but most comics online can be made pretty quickly and I would imagine they are. Mine included. And most of the ones that must take a decent amount of time are put up at slower rates than the others. It is constant work though. So for when you're really busy you might need to find some time to work on it. But I think that goes with maintaining any kind of ...anything... for a period of time and its not really hard to do a little work often.

Usually they are eventually cared about by a fair amount of people but not enough to earn a living! They get to see that their work is appreciated by neat people + not a lot of money! It is middleground.

Stick figure comic. I don't know what the stats are, but stick figures have as much of a shot at building an audience as anything in the crazy world of internet comics.

It is though. Site maintenance, design and sitting down bi-weekly EVERY WEEK to think up new concept and draw them out without repeating yourself or ripping off another person who had the same idea is more work, especially if you're going to do it about something. Starting up a comic means you don't get a creative break. You can't put the down the sketchpad for long before having to pick it back up again (again, if you're committed). Obviously whenever you start your webcomic you're going to have other things going.

The middleground is where a comic doesn't want to be. There are business rules that apply here to help people caught in a middle ground, but while you're in the middle ground chances are your server costs are costing you more than money than you are putting in to the thing, which means not only is the comic not making you money, a potentially major expense is starting to come out of your savings to keep the thing going.

You're definitely right about the difficulties of maintaining a web site. I don't know a damn thing about computers (as evidenced by my incredible word balloons) and it's basically what is stopping me from making that commitment. I do admire how prolific and punctual you guys are, it's a lot more effort that one would think. If I found someone that knows how to run a site and would help me maintain one, providing content wouldn't be a problem. If ever you guys are sweating deadlines and you need a last-minute substitute, I would gladly explore more of Robobo's untapped potential in future strips.

I feel like a bit of a prick since you guys wrote such kind things on your site about my comic. It's much appreciated, I feel inspired to be more productive now.

If it means anything, I made my first site after spending a few hours reading an html tutorial. Not a pinnacle of web design by any means, and I still have little idea of what I'm doing when it comes to that sort of thing, but it did the job. There are also free services like Drunk Duck that handle most of the management for you so you can just make the comics and upload the pictures.
