Black and white is 8 bit pixel depth. Full color is 24 bit pixel depth. Full color with transparency is 32 bit pixel depth. 8 bit is a hell of alot less information than 24 bit, so I wouldn't be surpriesed if it did make a difference.

It's not always that easy.
My TV, for example, can't be adjusted all the way to b&w, and I've never seen a color PC monitor that let's you adjust color saturation.
