I'm sure if anyone is running at cops waving a knife, the cops would be be well within their rights to shoot them in the fucking face a dozen times. I'd say they went easy on her. Stop being a liberal peace-loving hippie.

I must say the tackle was awesome ... Ray Lewis like. The hulk like feat of strength car ramming was a bit funny. His reaction at that was calm too. He was trying to be kind and gentle with hre, until she came at him with a Knife.

Yeah she was crazy and retarded, not a good combo. And when said person has an object that can kill. Worst case scenario. Hand to hand training WORKS when its hand to hand, Not Knife versus Palm.

But he was non-chalant about it. "Leave it."

She wouldn’t have been running around in the open waving the knife if the cop didn't pull her out of the car. Obviously she was distraught and deranged, there could have been a few dozen better ways to handle that then tackle a mentally ill person and have her stab herself.

A guy I went to high school with stopped taking his bi-polar meds and locked himself in his bathroom. His parents called the police to help. The cops came and busted in the door. The dude is already paranoid - then he's in the shower naked and cops kick the door down. He wrestled with the cops and they shot and killed him. [RIP Ryan]
The years of lawsuits that followed finally ironed out the fact that local law enforcement don't know what the fuck to do when dealing with mentally ill people. And Ryan's family was able to have the department involved at least establish some new training procedures.

I can recount at least 2 other similar stories I'm not too far removed from.

Fuck the police, and all overzealous authority figures. :\

Of course, it's the cop's fault. She had just rammed his police cruiser. He should have just let her off with a warning, that asshole!

She was clearly dangerous, crazy or not. Not only to the cops, but anyone just walking the street. The cop's first job was to get her out from behind that wheel before she tried anything else. And what happens? She chases him with a knife. The cop should have put a bullet right between her eyes right there but they attempted a non-lethal response instead. It's her fault she got that knife in the belly, not the cop's.

I know plenty of police overstep their authority and shit, but this clearly wasn't the case here.

Yea, the cops do over react a bit too zealously sometimes.

But what I think more people need to keep in mind is the situations that police officers are put in nearly every day.

They don't know a person is mentally ill. They don't know that people "are totally harmless, he'd never hurt a flea!", all the unknowns are what make situations dangerous.

I can speak from experience that even the most out of shape, old, broke down fool can be dangerous in the wrong situation.

Does it suck when cops make a poor decision and it costs someone their life? Sure, but that's the way it goes sometimes.
