Let's not get carried away here. Nerd is exclusively for nerdy activities. It doesn't matter how trivial the sports fanaticism is, how stupid you or I think it is, it is not nerdy like caring about unreleased video game systems. There are aficionados and then there are nerds (see Max Anime).

Don't kid yourself. Anyone who goes to a sporting event dressed up like a Viking or a covered completely in paint is not morally superior to your average Naruto cosplayer. They're both nerds, you're a nerd.

Moral superiority (wtf) has nothing to do with it. Getting hyper-involved with sports is a lot more socially acceptable than pretending to be a cartoon.
