As mentioned, it was the Samsung BD player and not the HD-DVD player that has issues with dual layer. All HD-DVDs are DL, and soon they will have three layer. It is not known if the player will play TL, but if it doesn't, then yes, firmware will fix it. The Toshiba player has an ethernet port for firmware updates, but the Samsung player does not... so if they can fix it with firmware, they will have to mail you a disc or make an image available online.

As I mentioned, ALL HD-DVDs are dual layer right now. They have no reason to release single layer since dual layer is "only" 30 gigs... look at all the size issues the 25 gig BluRay discs have.

I have Enter the Dragon on HD-DVD and it looks far better than it does on DVD. Not as good as something like Aeon Flux which is new and a lot of digital effects, or something like Sky Captain which is shot in HD... but it still looks damn good. Lethal Weapon looks decent too. The newer the movie, the better, just due to how well they took care of the film, plus film degrades over time.

With 500K launch units the PS3 isnt going to be the millions and millions of Blu-Ray players in peoples houses in a month trojan horse every one claimed it was going to be

No, but it can still do decently well. For instance, think of this:

It won't be the dominating juggernaut Sony was trying to hype up it to but that doesn't mean it will necessarily be a failure, either. An extra one million Blu-Ray players sold is still an extra one million ready consumers.

If both formats flop but Blu-Ray continues to sell to a million+ auto-installed user base, then it wins as much as either can. You're assuming there's a true winner in the Battle No One Cares About. Both of them are up against DVDs, not each other.

I'm not getting into this arguement again, because I wouldn't say "no one" cares about it, because I hear people talking about it all the time... and I know people with players (including myself).

I really don't I do not have a HD TV. Don't care.

I'm waiting until HD is the standard and all the bugs are ironed out with the formats. Not much point to it now.

As for the whole film vs. digital thing, I'm torn. As an amateur filmmaker myself, I love shooting and editing in digital, mainly due to the ease and practicality. But there is an organic component to actual film that does seem lost when shooting on a digital medium. Take the grainy film stock James Cameron used when he made Aliens. It gave the film a raw, documentary-style look. You can run a grain filter over digital video but it doesn't look quite as natural.

But I'm sure, as time goes by, that digital will reach the point where it will be able to catch up to and surpass what film does. I respect film and all, but it's expensive and less pratical to shoot with. Digital will be a boon to independant filmmakers, and in this era of super-glossy Hollywood blockbusters I'll support anything that'll give the little guy a foot in the door.

See, this is my point... this is the most common way things work out... people with HDTV seem to care, and people without it don't care. So that will be the downfall of the formats since more people need to get HD to realize/care.
