The Pirates of the Caribbean movies
Moriarty from Aint it cool news was given an advanced screening of the new Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest movie. His views on the first movie weren't all that favorable, but he's taken quite a shining to this movie. I'm concerned, since I really enjoyed the first and he didn't I'm left wondering if the movie has changed drastically. Then I wake up and realize Moriarty rarely knows what he's talking about outside of superhero movies.
The main complaint I've heard amongst friends is that the new movie seems to be going completely off the deep end with the surreal, paranormal aspects (Davy Jones' beard being tentacles, a shark pirate, etc). To them I say that the first movie was about a league of undead, skeleton pirates searching for gold coins. If you hadn't realized it by now you were already off the deep end and at the bottom of the sea.
Speaking of the bottom of the sea, (mild spoilers of some cool shit in the movie ahead) Bootstrap Bill Turner is rumored to be in this (Will Turners father). He was only referenced in the first movie and makes his triumphant debut as one of Davy Jones' ship mates. When the crew of the Black Pearl tossed him overboard he was afflicted with the same curse the others were. So he sat tortured at the bottom of the ocean for decades until he begged Davy Jones to make him one of his crew. The idea being that once you become one of his pirates he owns you forever.
The mutations of Davy Jones and his crew are explained as them being at one with the sea so long they've evolved. I can't wait to see this movie, and am completely glad they took the time to film 2 and 3 of the franchise together. This way we'll only have to wait until NEXT summer before the follow up movie is released (Back to the Future style).
I'm really excited about these movies. The first one was a really fun pirate movie, with a lot of action on an epic scale that still somehow managed to be about the characters and not the special effects. From all reports I've read the second movie screenings have been just that, only better.
It comes out next Friday, and with stiff competition from Superman it'll be interesting to see how it holds up. I'm more excited about Pirates than I am Superman.
I know I can't be the only one excited about these movies.
