E3 is Finished

I really don't think this is a good idea. I think having one big event each year for the gaming industry is important in unifying the gaming industry. And how is Sony measuring the media output vs. cost for this, anyway? They aren't. The only difference this year over last is that Sony had a really miserable showing, and a CEO that should be embarrassed to have the words public speaking on his resume.

Most of this is a lot of huzzah over nothing. If Sony gives up on E3 then Microsoft and Nintendo still step up their game, effectively stealing Sony's thunder completely.

The San Diego Comicon isn't the right forum for gaming companies who aren't somehow working with movie or comic franchises. The point of that convention is comic related materials. It would just seem as though the video game industry was pulling a complete "me too!" approach to events.

The only reason Hollywood has after parties is to meet and network. A level programmer for video games isn't exactly a star that can move units for you that a Brad Pitt is for movies. Hell even the game designers name has little to do with how a game moves (99% of people who buy games don't even know who Miyamoto is).

A lot of the "me too" attitude gaming is trying to pull like they're the next movie medium is part of the over all problem. The business of gaming is nothing like the business of movies. It's not anywhere near that kind of money.

I like video games.

This sucks. I wanted to attend at least one in my life.

E3 is always the best time of the year. Fuck the bitter journalists. Like they have anything better to spend their time doing.

Shut up. I went to an afterparty for a movie after a premiere once. Okay, it was for Soul Plane. But nevertheless, the party was for the stars and musicians in attendance to fuck, get drunk, and get high. It was glorious.

Damn, and I was looking forward to attending one, too.

Me, too. :(

Now I'll never get to be shoved around in a giant convention center while surrounded by nerds that think they're important.

Have you ever been to an arcade where every game was just actually either a looped video or a 3 minute demo, and each of those shitty demos was unfinished and buggy and had a long line in front of it? And if you tried to play those awful demos, a company representative would stand next to you and scream stupid marketing shit in your ear about their game? A place where there's no food or water unless you've got a pocket full of $10s to waste on fast food that normally would've cost you 50 cents? Ugly, nerdy men everywhere with a random booth babe visible in the distance getting swarmed by horny losers? If so, E3 is right for you!

I had way more fun while I was there doing everything else that didn't involve E3. I didn't even go on the last day, I just slept in. The experience is fantastic, though the actual show is not. The pre-show conferences were awesome, other than Sony boring everyone to sleep. Microsoft keeps things very lively and tries to mimic a party atmosphere, and Nintendo showing off Zelda: Twilight Princess for the first time and everyone reacting to it was unreal.

And I'm glad I didn't even think about attending these last two years, because they sounded fucking awful. I don't know how any of those people kept their professionalism in check and didn't let out a loud LOL when they announced the PS3.

I've heard plenty of horror stories about E3, but like you said, the experience should be fantastic.

I just wanted to attend one, and I planned on that one being next year. So it's understandable that I'd be bitter when the thing is cancelled just one year before I was planning on going after all these years of starry-eyed wishful thinking.

E3 does a good job attracting the casual public. All my friends gamer or not know what E3 is and enjoy seeing the new stuff. This industry doesn't do a lot of good things, but E3 is one of their better ideas.
