SPRINGFIELD, Ore. — A 2-year-old girl's leg was severed when her father's riding lawn mower accidentally backed over her, the Lane County Sheriff's Office reported.
Isabella Norton and friends were following her father, Kirk, 33, as he cut the backyard grass Wednesday evening, the sheriff's office said.
Unaware that his daughter was behind, the father backed the mower away from a fence, and ran over the girl. Deputies said he wasn't aware of the accident until another child informed him.
The girl's leg was severed at the hip, the sheriff's department said.
The girl was taken to the emergency room and then to Oregon Health & Science University Hospital in Portland.
The girl and her family were "doing well, considering ... ," a Lane County officer said Friday.
"It's got to be one of the absolute worst things that can happen to you," said Lt. Randy Smith. "They're trying to find a way to move forward."
The family was talking about a prosthesis to replace the leg, he said.
The sheriff's office said it found no signs of impairment or negligence on the part of the father.
