icarusfall is making bleeding hearts such as myself look bad. I'm sympathetic to how difficult it must be for her. But she caused a baby to die through gross neglegence on her own part. Come on. If that was someone else's kid, you wouldn't think twice about throwing her in jail. You don't have the right to kill your kid just because you'll feel bad after you do it.
If she's such a non-functional alcoholic that she's homeless and unable to care for her child, jail might be what she needs. It's a roof over her head, and she'd learn to live life sober.
No, the word choice was a poor one - I extrapolated where I shouldn't have. I was really talking about people wanting her imprisoned for this. Why does it have to be let-her-off-the-hook-completely or throw-her-in-jail-for-the-rest-of-her-life? icarusfall isn't arguing let her off the hook. He's just arguing throwing the book at her is not proportionate to the crime committed. You throw the book at a murdering rapist, not at a criminally negligent mother. She should be punished, but not to the extent everyone is saying.
